I recently watched a short news report about a study in a chinese university where they tried to find out whether men are more vain than women. The researchers made appointments with their subjects to be interviewed and each has to wait in a waiting room before being interviewed. In each room there is a one way mirror where researchers can video tape the subject's action without being seen. In that study, men looked at themselves in the mirror more than the women.

Could men be more vain than women?

Maybe men just like shiny objects, like mirrors, more than women do?

Maybe men need to constantly look in the mirror to boost what little egos they have in the first place. Insecurity is a real PIA.

How do you account for them constantly doing things that make them look stupid in public, just for the hell of it? Or is that just me? Confused

Wasting time on something is not the same as having mastered it.

I'd suggest the women spent less time checking themselves in the last-minute mirror because they had already gone over themselves and also knew - through vigilant care and experience - that their appearence was since unmarred.

Similar generalization:

Superficially it appears women like to shop, and they must be good at it. Because women spend so much time shopping, right? Wrong. Women spend a lot of time shopping because they're relatively inept shoppers. They go into stores without a clear plan. They don't know where everything is. They're unsure of fair prices or alternative products. So female shoppers wander around, overwhelmed. Contrast men, whom (gross generalization) march into a store with a mental list, and connect the dots on that list - they've already mapped - also noting new items and prices as they go, so next trip will be even more efficient. Shopping's a game men stay on top of, while women get mired in it.

Of course the study doesn't proof that men are more vain than women. It merely points out that men look at themselves in the mirror more than women.Well in this case young chinese men.

Men are more observant; women don't notice the mirror.

Women are more observant; they see more important things around than the mirror.

however you like Stick Out Tongue

Could we be like Peacocks? The male peacock has to display his colorful array of feathers to the female peacock to attract mating partners.

I'd say that we are like peacocks, except that I would say both men and women do this. Women probably put more effort into this than men, but I wouldn't say they do it more necessarily.

The world knows that women are vainer than men. There is no second answer.

In that study, I can surely say that women in that room had seen themselves a thousand times in the mirror before leaving home. Suppose, if the appointment was at 10:00 am, women may have started to makeup themselves at 6:00 in the morning, but poor men who even had forgot to see their faces in the mirror while leaving home, made use of the mirror in the waiting room.
