If you look at the top right of your screen you'll notice a chat button.

Let me know if you like it or dislike it. It runs off Java and is safe to use.

Click on the chat button and answer yes when prompted to run the Java applet. The aplet is from the site listed below. It's used all over the web and is virus and trojan free. No popups, etc. It's clean.

    http://www.pjirc.com/main.php

You can also use any IRC chat client you wish

    Connect to : irc.freenode.net then /join #science

It's come to my attention that some people may be having problems with the Java chat applet. I've made some changes that I hope fix this problem.

It's a normal Linux IRC server, It's unique to the forum but accessible to anyone who knows about it.

    irc.thescienceforum.com

Any IRC client should work. I may change the server software to something else later on, I'll make sure it stays IRC compatible.

I can't log on, I have to wonder if others are having the same problem. May be time for me to invest more time in changing the server software.

Ok, well I've changed the software to Dancer IRCD. This is the same server software Freenode runs. There will be a delay connectiing as it tries to identify you and make sure your not a bot.

    Give it time to connect.

I think that's because it has no channels

The default channel the web based people will use is "#"

    so /join #

Not sure if that was wise on my part.

I meant what is the name of the server and what is the channel name (i.e. #science). I cant seem to connect through the applet or whatever it is, and I use a program which gives me a server list and channel list. Would you know how to get to it through there or is that impossible?

The best thing to do is open it up in mIRC or some other such program and sit. More and more people have been coming to visit all the time.

When I can find the time to figure it all out, I'll get the nick server running along with the channel server and try to reduce the login time. It works for now.

Myself and DEChengst have been in the chat now pretty much every single day. Most of the time mid day US time. I know a couple of you have stopped by in the past. So far it's been pretty dead after say 4 PM Mountain time. Best time is from 11 AM to 4 PM MST.

I just wanted to point out that yes people do use the chat

Just an update on the status of the IRC server.

I had updated the Kernel version on the web server to the latest version, this runs nice and a little faster etc. The problem is dancer IRCD now complains about the zlib version being different. I tried to recompile it with the same results.

For now I've pointed irc.thescienceforum.com to another server. It's not setup at all right, but may work.

Sorry, I'll get this resolved ASAP.
