I tried to write a rather simple TEX statement, but received a compile error. It doesn't always fail1 but it seems to be failing where it ought to succeed. Does anyone else experience this?

1 Particular statements always fail, but there are statements that succeed.

One other thing that I've noticed is that the character set that displays correctly is greatly reduced compared to earlier times.

I have reported it ,but I don't understand TEX if that is of any importance (and I don't expect any reaction to the report but have done it anyway)

You need to mind your Ps and Qs...

Just checking that it is not because they are all on one line:
    p:

    q: [LaTeX ERROR: Compile failed]

    p:

Well, that is bizarre isn't it.
