If there is, it must be at least 9489, because the first post in the following thread contains 9489 characters:

(The thread is titled "Telepathy is possible")
A lot of websites have character limits but they never tell you how many characters you have left because you have enough space such that running out of characters is rarely a concern.

The only time I've ever run out of space was one time, aaaaages ago, I tried to copy in something - can't remember what. Whatever it was I tried to do, the "thing" became a virtual infinity of characters in the process and it just would not "go".

Whatever the limit might be, it's pretty generous.

If I recall it correctly, the limit is 10,000 characters and that is, as member adelady noted, pretty generous.
Nonetheless, the character limit was an issue I had to solve, since I had to break up my text at the correct moment in order to increase its readability.
"The only safe rule is to dispute only with those of your acquaintance of whom you know that they possess sufficient intelligence and self-respect not to advance absurdities; to appeal to reason and not to authority, and to listen to reason and yield to it; and, finally, to be willing to accept reason even from an opponent, and to be just enough to bear being proved to be in the wrong."

~ Arthur Schopenhauer, The Art of Being Right: 38 Ways to Win an Argument (1831), Stratagem XXXVIII.

You are correct. The vBulletin forum software has that number as a default setting, and it may be changed in the admincp.
