i see right now many user ids that start with the same charcters like jakonouppy, jakogenzep. 16 of them all starting with 'jako'. they are active members with no posts. this morning i saw the same thing except the many user ids started with 'tony'. what are these ? are they web crawlers of some type ?

There are literally thousands of these. The CAPTCHA doesn't slow them down in the least. I started deleting some of these accounts, but gave up on it. It would be a full time job. I don't know what they are or what their purpose is.

As far as I can tell, they just sit there, not posting anything. It's worrisome, for sure, because if they suddenly decided to launch a spam attack, they could swamp us out pretty well.

Kalster and I don't have the full admin authority to make changes like that. Only "Admin" can do that. I can just select between a few existing CAPTCHAs, which I already tried, and it didn't help.

Do not be too hard for yourself.
There was a significant decrease in the rate of new members joining the Science Forum after you deleted some of those accounts.

    Nuh.

They've been sitting around for months. This pop up thing coincided with at least my own ISP having serious, worldwide problems putting them off the air for hours and the popups appear immediately following restoration of service. Looks like other ISPs have had related problems at exactly the same time, with or without being off the web entirely.
