    Take this thread to heart.

I believe thescienceforum has great potential and *could* keep many of the refugees, but as it stands, that probably won't happen.

My reasons for thinking this are simple. Yet they make perfect sense: thescienceforum.com runs on phpbb- a nice piece of software, but a relic from the bulletin board craze of a few years ago.

What this place needs is a modern, well engineered forum system. And lucky for thescienceforum, such software happens to exist-- its called 'simple machines' (fitting eh?)
    http://simplemachines.org.

(I have no association with the creators)

It looks great, and as the admin of a few simplemachines boards, I can tell you it is the most powerful and featureful board in existence (despite being totally free.) Lucky for thescienceforum, converting phpbb to simplemachines is a very simple task. And I like this place so much that if you want, I'm willing to help you convert a test installation on my own servers to prove just how amazing it is. Just dump a sql db (I swear on linus torvalds I won't hack it) and send it to me via email. Or if you prefer, I'll give you the username/password and let you do it yourself. Its amazing enough to secure your site a place alongside the best science boards on the internet (most of which are too hacked up to securely convert to different BB software at this point)

Just try it! SimpleMachines excels in speed benchmarks and is the most visually appealing (easily skinnable with css- another thing I'm willing to help with.)

    What's the cost? Open source?

I'm game to try new things if the cost isn't very much. This forum hardly even pays for the domain registration..and that's just sad.

I created this forum as a service to the people on the net, knowing full well it would be a money pit (time is money).

In any event let's see who is interested in this new software and see what we can do. I would love to make this place rock.

I would say that it is the members and staff that make a place "rock". Not the flashy
software that runs it. (Great board though but a bit heavy for "scientific" discussions and
debate.) I have set up and run YaBB and loved it. But for the best and simplest for
deeper debates and discussion we settled on DISCUS boards. My only advice is to
"keep it simply simple". KISS. As far as I can tell, you have the makings of a great BB
on the web. Keep the advertising to a zero if possible and post your costs and don't be
    afraid to ask for donations.
It's not what you know or don't know, but what you know that isn't so that will hurt you. Will Rodgers 1938

Simple Machines adheres more closely to KISS than any BBS I've seen. Not sure where you get the idea of SM being heavy, as one of its main selling points is being 'lite' by default.

    (In)Sanity,
Its completely free, released under the Simple Machines license (like an LGPL)

There are a few different mods which allow good integration of adsense with the BBS (if you want to boost revenue)

I suggest you download and try a test installation + themes. Be sure to check out the built in package manager/auto-update. Very cool features. Oh - and my favourite theme 8) :

I'll give it a try, the link you listed however doesn't have a KISS look to it at all, far too much stuff on one page. Simple is Simple, not clutered. Still I'll see what it can do.

Can't be gay, Gustav. I don't have a thing to wear that will match that color scheme. And I bet you don't, either.

But those colums ... the Helios layout was redeeming for that lack, but the colors were just awful. Those greens just don't go with each other at all.
