Yup. Unless the question is one that the guidelines tell you to PM a moderator about.

No, you cannot post a Weiner-type picture of yourself.

    I don't think so.

    Is racism against the rules?

    No.
But it's against the rules to post racist comments.

    Absolutely.

Racism is definitely against the rules. See the Questionable Conduct heading at The Science Forum Guidelines

    Specifically

2(b) No hateful remarks about race, sex, religion, sexual orientation and the like; this includes use of the word 'gay' as a negative word. Pointing out faulty points in one's logic is okay. But try not to connect it to personal traits. Moderators may warn when they feel it is inappropriate or directing the thread in a negative way.
    and
2(d) No racially, sexually or religiously motivated images or text that are deemed, by Moderators, to have great potential to cause personal offense to other users and/or promote prejudice shall be tolerated. Though we encourage breaking taboos, we also hope that you try to adapt your medium. Discussion of the existence of the holocaust is one thing, posting kiddieporn for the sake of provocation another.

Hmmm. It's still complicated. It's not against a member. It's against a public figure. It's still offensive, though, particularly to those of us who respect this figure.

Racism as a topic is not a problem. It'll usually come up in Politics or Behaviour/Psychology, maybe Economics.

But it's perfectly valid to raise if it's topical or something's turned up in research somewhere.

I'll weigh that. I don't see a clear case so I'll err on the side of caution and keep my own counsel. Thank you very much for the advice on this subject.

Is it possible to explain the context without going into details, or is this the wrong type of situation?

Instead of making racist remarks why not try to use vocabulary that would be more suitable and better worded to express your views about someone. As an example I think all blue crabs can't do anything worthwhile in life. I could have said there are certain crabs that do nothing in life.

I think they wanted to report a racist post, rather than make one.
