I tried to log in this morning and couldn't, the forum said I was permanently banned! Now I can log in again but all my posts have been deleted.

Can anyone tell me what is going on?

I have to think it was a screw-up. I hope it wasn't me. The spam-o-matic button is handy but a bit dangerous. If somebody would accidentally mark a post for deletion, then click on spam-o-matic, that bans the person and deletes all their posts.

Odd, your profile shows conflicting info. On one hand you have received 1077 Likes, but there are none to be found on the list page. On the other hand, your record of Likes given are still there. I'm guessing that there may be some form of data corruption due to hardware failure perhaps?

What happened was that a spam post was nuked with the Spam-o-Matic feature, but your IP was included in the ban and wipe. It looks like due to NAT or something that some members share IP addresses as picked up by the site.

It didn't wipe all your posts, but the last 50 I think, which goes back all the way to 3 October. There is no way to retrieve those posts either.

I'd like to apologise for this on behalf of the forum. It could have happened to anyone of the members or mods. It is a very unfortunate situation indeed and I hope you can forgive us.

I'd like to blame spammers for the whole thing.

It would appear that some record has been preserved when members quoted PhDemon's posts in their reply. The most recent ones that I'm able to find within a 48hr span are located here.

Is there a way to see who did the Spam-O-Matic ? I used it twice this morning, but I am pretty sure it wasn't PhDemon's posts. However, if it was and I accidently banned him I sincerely apologise - that was of course not my intention !!!!

It was Adelady, but like I said, it could have been any one of us.

Just tested with your last post and I tested it earlier as well. If I wanted to ban you using the Spam-o-Matic feature, I'd be banning babe as well!

We'll have to try and sort something out so this can't happen again.

Turns out it was me. !!&&*#@?!

And, to put the ugly cherry on the unpalatable sundae, it now seems that even the routine moderator option to "delete as spam" will also pick up apparently unrelated members and delete/ban them along with the targeted post/er. (The example Kalster gave me is weird. If he tried to ban me, he'll also ban another member on the other side of the world.)

I've always been quietly confident in using the near-nuclear destroy-everything automatic banning option only for blatantly obvious spam items. Pride goes before a fall, I suppose. These tools have been reliable until now - but it seems we can't always rely on them.

Suddenly, deleting and banning in a single move regardless of the option chosen is off the table because we have to double check. So I'll be deleting posts/threads only. Then I'll use the separate process to check that one and only one user will be banned. I promise.

Is this proof that we don't live in the Matrix?
For example: if we lived in the Matrix, someone would have woken up one day and discovered that their wife only started to exist 3 days ago - but has still managed to collect an astronomical number of shoes, handbags and dresses? (Or are all women capable of that?)

It is a feature that ADMIN added to the forum where mods can simply select a post and then by using the Spam-o-Matic feature (to be found among the moderator tools available to us), it removes basically all traces of the offender, i.e. posts, threads started, PM messages etc. It is only used for Spam though, which can get overwhelming sometimes. There is also a Delete as Spam feature which is a little more involved, but that also seems to be affected.

From now on we have to make sure that the correct person is being taken action against and if that doesn't work, we'll have to delete each post individually and then go and ban him, which is time consuming.

If a spam bot posts a gazillion posts all over the forum at one time, the spam-o-matic lets you just select one, click the button, confirm it, then delete it. That will clean up the whole forum at once, and you don't have to track down each and every post. Very useful, but dangerous.

Maybe there's a way to set it up so it doesn't delete posts permanently, or waits a few days before deleting them permanently.

Wouldn't the script identify the account reference number and search only for those to delete, and keeping a separate record spammers on a weekly basis and doing manual housecleaning of confirmed accounts then?

thanks for all the explanations guys
kinda ruins the alternate universe idea

If we were to gain a fud in this universe, does the previous residential fud have to go to an alternate universe or could we end up with 2?

    This has only happened today.

Not so long ago I was nuking what seemed like dozens of spam items, day after day, and I wasn't the only one. If this problem had existed then, we'd have had no members at all by now.

The filtering software was updated then and everything's been going fairly well with almost no spam at all showing up when I'm here - though I've noticed an increase in that kind of blatant spam in the last week or so.

Suddenly there's a problem in our system for managing the spam that is getting through. I'm not inclined to conspiracy notions, but we're dealing with spammers here. Admin's going to have to look at whether something's gone wrong in the site software, the "spam-o-matic" package, or whether the spam that's coming in has nasty additions it didn't have before.

    Is it banning by IP?

Because if in the sweep it is also targeting others, it's possible the settings may need to be changed so that it does not target their IP or possibly having show up a list of the names of the people caught in the net.

Something has happened. It worked like a dream until now.

The whole object of having the automatic process was to make it easy for us to moderate - where no actual moderation is involved. No need to log in each time, no need to select options about which threads/posts to delete, no decision about length of ban. Just a complete nuking of all associated threads and total permanent ban of the targeted member ID at the press of a single button.

Not at all like dealing with known members and problem posts or problem behaviour where you have to consider lots of stuff. That's moderation.

There is a bit of an error trap. When somebody reports a post, then it shows up on your screen, and you have to go to the thread that's reported to get the spammer. If you forget where you're at, you could mark the "reported post" thread instead of the thread that's being reported, then you you will zap the person reporting the spam, instead of the one who is being reported. I don't know if that's what happened here.
The spam-o-matic does ask you to confirm who you are banning, but you can get lazy and just click the confirm button without reading. I am remided of an episode of South Park where Kyle is kidnapped by Apple and subjected to all sorts of atrocities. It turned out he had downloaded an application from the internet and agreed to all that without reading the user agreement.

Nuh. It was either one of those cyrillic/chinese character ones or the half-a-dozen-letters-that-don't-even-make-a-word ones. Even though I'm sort of used to seeing them by now, they still give me a bit of a jolt when I look at them before bringing down the guillotine.

That could be what happened, just about the last thing I did before the "ban" was report a spam post in a non-alphabetic oriental looking language.

That would make me suspect that the software was linking the two (unless I got up and did something on the site while I was asleep). But Kalster finding that even the delete-as-spam option now would also ban babe though I'm the only one targeted tells me that something's gone amiss.

We have had a couple of random events like this before. But a software and filter clean up fixed that.

Sounds like time for the steam cleaner and the sand blaster - both for the spam filter and for checking what the more recent automatic updates to the various bits of software might have accidentally done.

at least the delete-as-spam doesn't completely blast all the member's posts
a soft delete can always be reversed, whereas with spam-o-matic it's a hard delete

I can give you all your posts in a single .txt file as I can still retrieve most of them from an older backup. It wouldn't be possible though to bring them back into the database without spending significant time and effort.

Thanks for the offer but I'm not too bothered TBH, the posts were made to help or amuse (or point out daftness), they were a product of their time which has passed. They served their purpose and are gone, I'm not too fussed about archiving them. No need to spend any time or effort on my account.

Honorable acceptance that 'It is what it is' and a comment that pretty much encapsulates life and the human condition.

Dywyddyr, surely as the cohabitant with a cat, you realize that cats are the users and never the used in all successful relationships with the species?

However, if you really think it best to commit your moggy to the kettle, European cuisine suggests sprigs of thyme.

Switzerland Cats are eaten in certain rural Swiss cultures;[13] the traditional recipe on farms in some regions involved cooking the cat with sprigs of thyme.[14] In January 2004, Reuters reported that, "Swiss culinary traditions include puppies and kittens. Private consumption of cat and dog is permissible. Swiss animal welfare groups say it is hard to estimate how many pets are eaten in Switzerland every year."[15]

I know people who lived through the deprivations of WWll in Europe and any source of protein was very much appreciated, including rabbit and cat. Our North American attitude toward cute and fuzzy may well be derived in part from the realization that very few of us on the North American continent have ever known such an extended period of hunger.

Of course there are very very few humans, other than infants, who are both cute and fuzzy. So I can't see why adult humans are off the menu.

Actually, I am rather uncertain whether Western society is more outraged by the eating of cats or the eating of humans, now that you raise the thought.

I am more offended by the eating of cats. Not enough meat on them to go through the trouble of skinning them. Not enough skin to make a decent hat out of. And they generally don't go around starting trouble. People on the other hand.... I need reasons NOT to eat them. The one you mention above is pretty good. I wasn't aware of it. Sounds like human version of mad cow disease maybe? On the other hand there are other marketable uses for the human body. Americans seem to have higher fat content and we could probably use their fat the same way whale blubber has been used. They're torsos would make easy to create leather jackets. Women's torsos would come with built in chest pockets. And many males would produce fur coats. Chaps would also be more easily made from leg flesh. The organs can be harvested to people who would hopefully take better care of them. The list could go on and on.

Hmm, a number of years ago I caught part of a local radio programme: some guy phoned in and asked "Since humans are made of mostly carbon why do we bury bodies instead of recycling them? Surely we could at least make pencil "lead" out of dead bodies".

I stumbled ( Normal method of getting about ) across this because I am nosy .. The system dumped the wrong fellow and all is getting fixed. This is good that it can be put right. It's the putting right that counts... and a little aside about eating your cat. It's a 'culture bomb'. The Western world does not eat it's pets.. but. It does depend on where you are. Some regions of Asia are known for the breeding of dogs for consumption. All sorts of equally horrid practices can be found. I suggest you not go looking... if you are at all bothered by what people might eat. ~ Meow.. !

Reminds me of an ex-colleague, a quite forthright lady who always said what she thought. If some one was "doing her head in" she would say something like "you're actually quite boring/stupid/a bit of a dick aren't you?", it's a rare person who can carry on a conversation in the same vane after a comment like this (and yes I was on the recieving end a few times )

When i was a lad, I shot damned near everything I could, including rabbits, and blackbirds and squirrels. I got so good with the rifle that I could hit running rabbits, or birds on the fly. The weapon became an extension of my intent. Fortunately, my best friend from grade-school had a mother who would cook damned near anything. So instead of me being just a wanton killer enamored of the "magic at a distance" of killing with a rifle, I was transformed into a food provider....................
She civilized and taught me well, and served an excellent blackbird pie.
    ....................
Due to unresolved mental issues with my military experience, I never gave my sons rifles nor taught them the skills.
Something that the one of my sons who helps me harvest deer wisher were different--------I've been thinking that it's never too late and we should remedy his non relationship with weapons, but wonder if it might really be to late for him to ever gain my proficiency with the rifle? He's 32 now.
I suspect that different things involving focus and coordination are best learned at different stages of developementent?
