Are comments which have been delegated to the Trash Can category no longer viewable by any segment, such as guests or children?

Travelling in Mississippi, my wife and I saw miles of the tenacious Kudzu vines enveloping large trees, as though it were either not considered a concern, or had become so widely sprawling that little was being done about it. This would seem to make the stuff a valid topic for scientific discussion, with or without illustration. jocular

If you want illustration, type 'kudzu' into search, go to wiki, hit the images option on the top line, and hey presto! Thousands of landscapes, closeups, and every other kind of image you want for 'kudzu'.

Not as if I was completely unaware.......at any rate, I did, even though still an internet "groper", figure out on my own, no less, that the "Trash Can" is viewable only to members. Thus the only remaining unanswered question is, nothing is in place to prevent minors from achieving membership in the forum, is that correct? jocular

Of course not. Just look at the number of homework questions we get.

Getting youngsters interested in science and maintaining / expanding those interests is a good idea.

And Harold's suggestion that we, generally speaking, stick to much the same standards as broadcast television is a fairly reasonable benchmark.

I was thinking more of late night television, maybe PG13 or so. Meaning, we won't lose our minds if someone posts the odd swear word every now and then, but excessive profanity will get you in trouble quickly.

Public broadcast standards in which country? It does make a difference.

You mean it's unknown as to what kids text, sext or otherwise distribute pornographically over their little cell phones. Kids could teach us a thing or two about swearing.

Few children under 12 haven't been exposed to excessive cursing. Few kids under 13 haven't been exposed to pornography. However, this forum does not need to be a proponent in that.

I could have sworn I saw a post in this thread that seems to be gone now, but it said something to the effect, if we as adults cannot behave and communicate more maturely and professionally than silly prepubescent children then we have more problems than we realize.

I have to agree with that. Profanity and nudity has it's place. When it serves no purpose but to be a shocking distraction than it is simply that. And in that context it should not be something considered acceptable on a forum of an academic nature.

I think a little bit of R rated language is ok...as long as it's not used as insult...or "over the top". However, I don't think nudity should be allowed. Not because I'm a afraid of some kid seeing a set of titties....it's strictly for people who view from work. Even if the image is hidden in spoiler tags, it still gets loaded, and some IT departments monitor everything you load...and we don't want people getting in trouble at work. A link to an image that contains non-pornographic nudity for the purpose of science should be allowed.

I'd think just coming to this web site would be against most company policies because it's taking time from something they are getting paid to do.

Not always. Part of my last job was "progress bar watching". I'd have to sit and wait for processes to finish on a computer. I was allowed to web surf while waiting, as long as it was within the rules.

I'm allowed to trawl the internet at work during my lunch hour.
But the internet policy is something along the lines of "Do not view content which would not be considered suitable for polite company."
So, no naked chicks for me!

It is difficult to meet that standard though.
If you ever do a google image search, there is a high risk of there being nudity at the bottom of any results page.

S.G. has said that porn is always three clicks away from any site.

I tested it- she seems to be correct. My son was on a childrens site- which has ads around it, including ads for other sites; which had ads including dating sites; which had ads for adult friend-finder - three clicks to boobage.

The public television censors in the USA are all totally freaking bull goose bonkers crazy.

They would rather have our children view 10000 murders and not a single breast.
    That ain't normal.

and some folks wonder why there seems to be a lot of violence in our society

Would the outcome be different if you installed Ad-Block?

with ad-blockers on it takes an image search of anything without the safe search turned on. And sometimes even with safe search on, nude images pop up and they can click them to a porn site.

What the truly insane censors don't seem to get, is that there is a great difference between the beauty of a healthy naked body and lust.

Locally, we had a prosecuting attorney who couldn't see a picture of a naked child without immediately defaulting to lust.
His default position then became "beat up on the mother who took and had the pictures of her own naked children.

(is there a parent out there who does not have any pictures of their children naked?)(if not, why not?)

Insanity runs deep in this society.

'Nuff said, so I won't post a picture:

The days when someone would enjoy seeing this old body naked have long since passed.

    That is awful.
You would think that search engines would take this into account and ban everything that might be NSFW content.

As far as NSFW there is a setting any member can use that causes images posted in threads not to load unless clicked on. I have used it in the past to speed up the loading of particular image infested threads. If I ever start accessing this forum from work or school I will change that setting while still at home, just to be safe.
