Harold sent my book promotion thread to the trash section and referred to it as "spam". It is difficult for struggling authors to find free, effective ways to promote work. I thought that at least HERE, among friends, I would not run into opposition. So, my question is, do you think what he did is right?

Promoting your book here IS spam if you're not offering anything of substance to the forum.

In addition, rehashing and personal attacks are BOTH against the TOU so you are doing little to demonstrate that you deserve to be here.

EDIT: To add something perhaps more helpful to you, if you have a problem with any moderator decision, you should PM that moderator instead of starting a thread.

Well, it was meant to have been posted in the Politics thread; there it would certainly not be "spam". The very word "spam" is an often hyperbolic, reactionary catchall term for anything people consider unworthy of attention.

I hate people who follow arbitrary rules. I'm well aware of Harold's status, thank you. Thanks for being an asshole, buddy. I wouldn't screw you over for no reason...but ok...

It is a way that large corporations stifle competition and promote monopoly formation...is that something you want to promote?

I just feel the word "spam" has taken on a very negative connotation and implies "useless junk", which my book certainly is not...

    It's advertising- pure and simple.
You're advertising a product for sale.
When it comes to advertising, you can only place an ad on someone elses property with permission.
Often times, you also pay to advertise.

I have a different suggestion. Why don't you start a discussion on what your books topic is? I don't mean, "I'll answer question 1, but for questions 2 and 3, you need to buy my book."
I mean, talk about the topic- you won't fill a thread with all the material in your book.

Why should you feel entitled to use something that belongs to someone else to increase your sales and income without paying the person who owns the site and pays all the fees for its existence for the service? There are server fees involved with this site, not to mention the man hours that the owner and administrators put into maintaining it without pay from anyone. No one here is entitled to use this site for whatever purpose they choose. If you wan't to do that, then start your own forum and promote your book there. Perhaps start a struggling authors forum where anyone who has written anything can talk about books they have written in hopes of getting some business. But then that would mean you are paying for their advertising for them. Wouldn't you feel used?
Speaking badly about people after they are gone and jumping on the bash the band wagon must do very well for a low self-esteem.

I think that would be the way to go about it. I don't think your book would draw much interest anyway, just based on what was in your thread. State's rights as it relates to slavery and the Civil War is a common talking point among those in the left wing who want more and more centralized government. However, if you can show that you have some unique knowledge, insights or perspectives, you just might get somebody interested in your book.

It doesn't matter if you think it is not junk. You've entirely missed the point. This is a science forum. It's for the discussion of ideas. It is expressly not for advertising one's writings, however valuable the author might think them to be. What you did was spam, pure and simple. Your advert is completely indistinguishable from other unsolicited adverts for toothpaste, time-share real estate deals and health remedies. I'm sure that many vendors of those products feel that they, too, are providing quality products that aren't "useless junk." But that doesn't make it not spam. Get it?

As for "arbitrariness," you're really complaining that you are not permitted to make your own (no less arbitrary) rules. Tough. This forum doesn't belong to you; it wasn't started by you; it isn't run by you; and it isn't moderated or administered by you. There are rules, and if you don't want to observe them, then leave. Do you want to discuss ideas with the folks here? Then don't spam -- and don't complain about not being allowed to spam -- and discuss ideas.

Mike, I agree with the others.

It might have been delightful to have a thread about the subject with your research and insights as part of a what probably would have been a good political discussion.

Instead you just promoted your book--which is by definition spamming our forum--and no allowed.

    Oh... And welcome back.

    ETA:

    I just re-read the O.P.
I saw that it says this: "Do you think this is right?"

Your question has been answered several times. It doesn't make you a bad person or a criminal. It just means you're outnumbered by the consensus of opinion. Since you asked the question, it seems reasonable for you to accept the answers.

Harold, I didn't stick to the Civil War period. I wrote about how it has been happening in modern times as well about the continuity of it all. Yes, it is pretty straightforward but I hope that it is eye opening as well. You may be politically informed; most are not.
