Thread: Kudo's to thescienceforum users.

just wanna point out how much i appreciate that this site doesn't have many users who insult/slam or are just on to tell everyone else that they are wrong..

which is ironic, considering that i was invited here by the same ppl that i used to pick on for doing that very thing..

Kudo's ppl..respect.

Different folks use forums for differing reasons, evidently. Surely, the mind-set of a member is related to the forum type, as well as his/her intent for being present there.

Given today's, er,........politically lopsided climate, I may even be remiss by my use of "his/her" nomenclature above, yes? I shall try to remember to include "it's" if I reference thusly in future work. Now, do I fit in with those folks you sought to leave behind? jocular

"They/their" is the standard gender-neutral pronoun in English (and has been for as long as English has been spoken).

sorry but i have a bone to pick with the use of the expression "kudo's" - assuming you mean to refer to acclaim or praise for an exceptional achievement, the word is "kudos", without apostrophe

The 'rules of engagement' are more intelligent here is the main difference apparent to me. The debates can be fierce as long as the posters contend with wrestling the topic to the mat and not each other.

Proper use of language can be far more effective (and even disdainful if that is the objective) than mere vulgarity and personal attack. The difference is, when you succeed in making your case in a respectful manner, others will frequently cite your argument.

A 'pissing match' may provide some comic relief for those researching the psychology of urine streams but it doesn't make much of a reference for those who may actually be doing scientific research. I understand that there are forums for purely 'social' interactions.

I enjoy this site because it offers subject matter for contemplation as well as an opportunity to get to know the individual posters.

I couldn't agree more about being able to get to know individual posters, it's always easier to learn from people you have gotten to know or like and you get the chance to learn things at your own rate as often the same debates will come up again, so if you didn't quite understand something the first time you have many more opportunities, without people necessarily thinking you're an idiot because you didn't quite understand things the first time. Also what I like is that people who usually discuss certain subjects together allow us to join in, some other forums are not quite so welcoming, unless they think you are an expert on the discussions in which you wish to join in. This makes it possible to get involved in all sorts of discussions here and really improve your overall general knowledge. Show an interest or willingness to learn certain things and some of the members will really make an effort to teach you. But probarbly the best thing about this forum is that whilst there may be the odd disagreement for the most part the members really respect each other, which paticularly makes for a place that people want to stick around.

Your post #16 is well stated Ascended. The posters and moderators (who are also posters) have all been quite forthcoming in sharing knowledge and answering questions. Other individuals have been very helpful with their technical skills and very generous with their personal time in teaching the less tech-savvy how to perform varies functions to enhance and better enable their participation.

I love this forum. You guys are awesome.
