So what if epidicus did a little sock puppetry, it's not like he flamed or trolled. I think his banning(albeit temporary) is bullshit.

If thread necromancy is such a faux pas, then why in the past have we been encouraged to seek old threads that have similar ideas as opposed to creating new threads?
And lately certain mods have encouraged that new threads be started as opposed to thread necromancy?
And what is up with the "Similar Threads" tool if mods are gonna bitch about thread necromancy?
If no standard is to be established in some direction, then I call Bullshit!
As an aside; Myself, I find thread necromancy amusing, along with the bitching that accompanies it.

What's with all the thread locking? If it hasn't actually exploded into a trolling flame war, then just trash it and let us all still have a poke at it.
I think that except in extreme and/or necessary cases, locking is bullshit.
Oh no, that thread is active, and fun! We better lock it!
    [/bitchiness][/profanity]

Okay, I feel better now. Just say'n.

I was some of the mud that got to sit up and look around.
    Lucky me. Lucky mud.

I disagree. There is no legitimate reason for sock puppetry.

I totally agree. There is nothing wrong with "thread necromancy" in of itself, as long as you don't try to have a conversation with a member who hasn't posted for years. If there is a thread that addresses a subject you wish to talk about, by all means find that thread and post your comments there. It is very silly to have multiple threads addressing the same subject.

I'd rather be exposed to sock puppetry over relativity, AGW, or evolution denialism.
Sock puppetry could be done so unobtrusively that no one is annoyed, or aware.
Although when it is done, I suspect it is mostly by the intrinsically annoying types.
What about the case of sock puppetry as therapy for a personality disorder?
Or as a control in a sociological experiment(For Science!)?

I agree about the necro threads. Sometimes, the most reasonable thing to do would be to post to the old thread. Sock puppetry, I dont necessarily care about depending on why it is being done.

Generally, I don't like locking threads, but have done it under certain circumstances - most recently the one about whether Sigurd is a troll. I didn't see a good purpose for that thread, which was for some members to comment or criticize another member. That could get ugly. Usually, moderators should let people discuss what they want, but there are exceptions, and the exceptions are what moderators are for.
