By Social Medium I mean the communication between friends as a jolly way to pass the time, as you would using Twitter or Face Page etc? The Science Forum is where interested Members and Guests debate disciplines relating to Subject Forums as Listed on the Home Page. This is primarily not a Social Network as a network in progress to further and dissiminate knowledge regarding the Sciences. As I understand the reason for the site. I'm not against debating friendships developing. This is healthy and good. I'm merely wondering why some Members seem to post "" Chat "" type Posts, away from Home Page Forums. Of course a Member is free to take the Mickey where necessary, this indeed lightens the Thread and could generate another Aspect to the Subject matter. Cut and thrust is acceptable too, we all need sharpening now and again. But if you have a Face Page or operate on twitter then keep your Social ideas in these Forums. Be nice to westwind by all means. you are sure to get lots of "" likes "" in return. westwind.

Either the above is "tongue in cheek" or someone is seriously OCD.
    @westwind; Do you know Coberst?

What would be wrong with that if they did but kept in in the forum whose purpose that is, e.g. the General Discussion Forum at General Discussion ?

All science forums that I’m aware of have a sub forum where members can discuss anything they please.

The following sub forums here are not about straight science:

    a) Mathematics
    b) Philosophy
    c) Education
    d) Politics
    e) Business & Economics
    f) General Discussion
    g) Science–Fiction and Non-Fiction
    h) Art and Culture
    i) Pseudoscience

and other things like links and trash can. This means that this forum is not just about science. You can discuss just about anything and if you can’t find a specific forum for it then you can post it in the General Discussion forum.

Dear GiantEvil. First time we have made contact? No, I did not know Coberst. Googled it up. Looks interesting. Will investigate further. Maybe, after six months or so i've found out that I am in the wrong Forum? Still, The Science Forum has been good for me. Brought me in out of the cold. Made me realise I had a weakness in my thinking process. I had too much assumption and was self opinionated almost to blindness of provable facts. Other Members of the Forum would have noticed this. Still, with the obvious self analysis, I managed to appreciate that any criticism coming my way was probably deserved and it certainly made me a better Poster. Did not change me though. I believe my opinions and general observations can still be of value most times in this Forum. And, seeing I've been around for awhile I've had time to sift some of the chaff from the wheat kernals. I am not one for chewing the Fat. I spit Fat and Gristle out. Just like munching on the bones. So I am intolerant of procrastination and small talk unless it is serving some real purpose. Just a waste of valuable time when more constructive suppositions could be Posted. Having declared that, I still like a little cut and thrust. Like Quote "" In what College did you learn to be an idiot? End Quote. So just checking with my Thread that we have no freeloaders aboard that are wasting my time with irrelevant self grandification. I know about this you see. Having been there. So don't chat on my Threads. Thank you. Oh, by the way, WTF is OCD? westwind.

I’m finding this thread very hard to understand so I have some questions

As I said in my first response, that’s only one of its purposes, i.e. its main purpose. It is not its entire purpose.

What does that mean? What does “debating” have to do with what you’re trying to say? Are you saying that if debating friendships devolope then you’re not against it? What is a debating friendship? Or you mean that you’re “not against debating” frendships which are developing? If so then who would be doing the debating? That sentence makes no sense to me.

What are Home Page Forums? And where would they be debating if away from there?

I don’t get it. First you seemed opposed to having social discussions here and now you seem for it in the same post. What’s up with that?

I like using the forums as a way to pass the time and talk to new people. I find that everyone here is friendly and helpful. At the same time, I am talking to people about science, so I enjoy the conversation and learn new things too.

Dear pmb. ( your poste 7 ). Explanations of phrases used to express the central theme of my Thread in this Forum.

Q1. ""What is a debating friendship?

Healthy respect earnt when one Poster "" debates"" the Thread topic with another Poster on a continuing basis.

Q2. ""What are Home Page Forums?.

Forums listed on The Science Forum index page, listing all Forums applicable to the Science Forum.

Q3. "" in this context what does "" take the mickey"" mean.?

    Friendly criticism.

Q4. What is "" cut and thrust""

Harder punches when dealing with a poste that is straying to bullshit. Another example if you will. "" If your brains were made of Dynamite, there wouldn't be enough to open a conversation "".

    Q5. What is Social Discussion?.

Social discussions belong on Facebook and Twitter, not on The Science Forum.

Hope the above explanations answer some of your doubts about this Thread. I do not always express myself correctly and this results in ambiguous meaning, but keep asking when you have some problem fully understanding intent. I shall endeavour to be more diligent, especially if you are monitoring my feeble efforts. westwind.

I am curious, what examples of discussions that fit this description ard are currently active or recent od you have?

Also are there specific forum guidelines/rule which say define what you are describing? I have never seen any complaints about the occasional thread in the general forum that seems to fit your description.

For paleoichneum. Your 12 Poste. Before the Train gets derailed paleo, and I realise you are asking a sensible question, I'll come back to my Thread Question, Quote "" Any mischance... Now, I was merely thinking out loud that some new Mem,bers or prospective Members may have gotten the idea, through some of our banter and goodwill Science related Threads and Postes, where we have had a little fun with each other, that it would be OK just to join up and be sociable. When prospective new Members read this Thread and your Postes, they will have a better understanding what we are about, and use this information to help them decide wether to join or not. And no, there is no Conspiritory here, just old westwind thinking out loud. And, to be honest, ( be warned, when people use this expression, it is just a get out ), I couldn't put my finger on any particular Member who would be having these Sociable Debates or goodie goodie chats on any of the Forums listed on The Science Forum, except chat box of course. There is one Member we should be concerned about and that is westwind. His ideas get ahead of his intelligence at times, or he forgets to put his headlights on. westwind.

So im confused as to the point of this thread. Are you asking people not to post the occasional social thread, even though there is precedent for them being allowed in the past?

For paleoichneum. I've been reflecting on my original intent for this Thread, and I have now formed a firm idea of what I was seeking. To help understand that this is a Science Forum, with Social pathways, not a Social Forum with Science pathways. westwind.

To me it has always been both, its a social community that primarily discusses science related topics, but often moves to other topics or has fun. I see no reason that this should be changed.

I think one person's "Chat" type posts can be other people's idea of a great discussion topic. I've seen posts that I would consider high quality with lots of great opportunities for real discussion largely ignored, whilst other irrelavant or daft sounding posts start intensive discussions. What I can say is this whilst there will always be some members whose threads get lots of responses no matter what they are about, this is because they are popular members who usually give high quality responses to others and so it's really just reciprocity, there are other posts that for the most part no one can tell if they will fly or flop and finally there are those that most of us would expect to flop but you cannot be certain.
All that said one thing is for sure, it's this uncertainty and rich variaty of threads and posts that makes things interesting.

If everyones efforts were all on a par about similar subjects expressing similar veiwpoints things would get stale awfully quick.

I also think the imagination shown in some of the threads and posts is fascinating and really adds to the colour and flavour of the site.

Thanks Chris. Very well put. And Informative for new and prospective Members. I'm glad I Threaded this topic, a little bit out of leftfield, but it certainly lead to a proper definition of what we are about. It is a little true that I find I am a little envious of Members who ""run "" with a Thread, managing to keep a hand on the throttle while branching out to perimitor views on the colour of your eyes. ( HE HE HE ). This is just westwinds interpretation of a run-a-way Thread. Still, as you say, quite intelligent, and certainly passes the time and supporting creative thinking. By the way Chris, did you notice the image(s) of the Mars Dog and the Australian Kangaroo on the first Rover picture downloaded? Created in the shadow of the ""Curiosity"".? By mischance that is? westwind.
