at some stage about a year and a half ago members were invited to nominate their choice of moderator for what was considered the subforums most in need of moderation - some subfora still have a sticky saying Nominate a moderator for this sub forum., e.g. in Environmental Issues, and the first clear candidate who reached the magic number of proposal of 5 (i think ?) got the job, provided (In)Sanity felt s/he was the right type of person to handle it

I'm not sure that policy (popularity contest) is still in effect.

Heinsberger; I would suggest you, or any person interested in moderating a sub-forum, PM that interest to (would suggest (In)Sanity) with comment. In most all other forums, this would be the procedure.

As a general rule we don't pick members who actively "want" to be moderators. It's often the case that these individuals have a desire to possess some form of power that other members don't have. It's not the moderators job to be an authority figure over everyone else.

It's more of a burden to the forumite to make sure no one is messing up the forum and leaving a hostile, unattractive environment for current and prospective members. It's responsibility, not privilege

It's like being the janitor, except without the money or the prestige.
