Apparently, at least one moderator is bored reading about the most popular topic in his forum, so he started a "mega-thread" on the topic, so there won't be all those separate annoying posts (taking up 20% of the forum) on various issues of the topic.

I can understand his position: day after day he has to read and review every post and comment. Any topic would get old fast from that perspective, but here's the thing: Most who visit this forum don't do that. To us the posts are fresh.

And to us, a big fat mega-thread that is a hodge podge of various issues on the most popular topic is confusing to read.

If it is believed that this popular topic is too dominant in the forum, why not start a new forum? The Climate Change Forum?

marnixR discussed how to handle the climate-change thread issue with the rest of the mods and admins before putting the mega-thread into effect, and everyone is in agreement on the idea.

Man can will nothing unless he has first understood that he must count on no one but himself; that he is alone, abandoned on earth in the midst of his infinite responsibilities, without help, with no other aim than the one he sets himself, with no other destiny than the one he forges for himself on this earth.

not bored - just afraid that the rest of earth sciences becomes swamped by climate threads (8 of the most recent 15 threads at the time i brought up the matter in the moderator's forum, which is slightly higher than 20%)

not everyone is so enamoured with climatology as you are, and it could easily put off new members who expect to see science rather than politics in a science forum

as for creating a new subforum, i leave that up to (In)Sanity, it's his forum after all

I think its an exellent idea that marnix has incorporated and hope that other moderators do the same with their sub fourms with topics that frequently pop up.

Oh I see. There is a consensus. Well, who am I to argue with a consensus. I guess our readers will just have to wade through the hodge podge of comments to get to any that are relevant to any subtopic.

Hey, here's an idea! Why not put all the forums and posts in a mega mega thread called the "Mega Mega Super Mega Science Thread"?

You have to understand that global warming comes up more and far too often, most people tire of talking about it. Older members anyway. I have a long time ago, if its sticky then new members and people still interested can talk away all day long.

I see it in physics, I'd suggest Janus puts a time travel sticky thread also. Or KALSTER do the same with bullying in behavioural and psychology. I'm not bothered either way, I'm just saying it makes more order and looks tidier.

my decision has nothing whatsoever to do with a consensus, but everything with asking advice from the other mods on how to deal with an issue that i thought could turn out to harm the forum

if in the long run, the decision for a single stickied global warming thread turns out to be a mistake, i'm not too proud to reverse my decision
i'm also open to suggestions from other members, but i don't think the objections of one member are sufficient to do so as yet

Again, why stop there. The science topics seem to dominate over the religious, political, and philosophical topics. There seems to be an imbalance, and I would think you older members would be fed up by now with all those "science posts!" Put them all in the Mega Mega Super Mega Science Thread. What could be more tidy than that?

All kidding aside, what you are saying is that a minority is sick of certain posts. It has to be a minority or those popular posts would not be popular in the first instance. Climate change posts bring in the hits, but who cares? All that matters is you and a handful are sick of them.

Yes you are right on that one. I am not seeing it as if I were a new member, and in seeing it as a new member I agree with you (apart from the mega super duper ultra superfly thread )

You are right. I am just a single bacterium. Wait a day or two and check the numbers then. So far the mega-thread is doing well. I think we have three participants thus far. Well, those numbers certainly are greater than mine.

Oh my! My heart nearly stopped! Someone on this forum thinks I'm right about something. Thank you! Thank you! Now my life is complete.

    *shakes head*

you really have a knack of interpreting anything i say in the worst possible light

all i was saying was that this is a temporary decision which may or may not be reversed, depending on how things go - for the moment it's too soon to gauge the effect of my decision and whether it will turn out to be a good one or not

you'll have to admit you're currently the only person complaining, and i wouldn't mind hearing what other contributors (especially the ones that are usually involved in the global warming threads) think of it before i make a final decision

You should not be so hard on yourself. My knack is simply an opinion, not a threat of putting you under a heat lamp.

I agree, let's do the experiment. Or maybe we could use a climate model to simulate what might happen.

As far as I know I am the only dissatisfied customer. The problem is most people don't speak up, they just quit and find a new forum. You might consder checking the numbers of people who participate in the next few days, and compare that drop to what you have today.

I was thinking of that actually. A flame and trolling sub forum, and I would encourage, errrerrr I mean... moderate it. :P

trust me - you don't want to be a moderator : you'll only get blamed whatever you do or don't do

Which is why I'd make a perfect moderator. I'd just tell people to fuck off.
