I believe that posts in the trash can should be deleted after a period of 30 days. This frees up some resources and removes some hosting costs (however minor), but it also allows the trash can to be more of a temporary state of a thread. If a thread is trashed, it has a small window of opportunity to become a legitimate thread again.

Also, this could be the new "pseudoscience". A thread that no longer fits into what is scientific will be deleted in 30 days. You have that long to prove your idea or thread scientific in some manner. This puts a timetable on things and would (hopefully) make people think more before they post.

So...I propose an idea that would save bandwidth and transform pseudoscience into a temporary stage where ones ideas are proven valid or not...and I'm Oscar the Grouch. Yeah. Glad to see we're keeping a high standard for discussion.

i doubt whether (In)Sanity is all that concerned about bandwidth, provided it doesn't slow down access to the forum

i seem to remember that i proposed something similar for Trash posts (i.e. make them disappear at the end of each month if nothing had been posted in them during the last 10 days) but it appears that the total number of posts matters for the forum's rankings + advert revenue

Too funny. The stuff in the trash is probably actually hurting the rankings. I'll set it to auto prune after say 15 days? Threads that are active will stay around, those that are not will vanish.

I see. What about a similar change to Pseudoscience? Give people ample time to prove their idea as valid to reality, say 30 days. After a discussion has ran its course and nothing good comes of it removal would be beneficial. Wouldn't it? This would, of course, require active (and careful) moderating of the subforum by someone with a very clear and agreed upon definition of what is pseudoscience and what is not.

That's a slippery slope. You could argue the same for the Religion sub forum, or Politics, or bring it up even to the soft sciences.

I rather like the long backlog of different topics in the different forums. It's fun to go back and read through some of the crazier threads.

Let's stick with the trash for now. If the mods feel something is truly just a total trash post they can move it to the trash and it will be cleaned up in a timely fashion.
