after about 3/4's year here, i would jsut like to say , well done, so far it has been great ly enjoyable, adn i have learned some, and hopefully have helped some,

post: i was jsut wondering if the mod's could find out the % of each country or the numbers (more logical) , of each country. obviously i woun't expect them to reveal names, or stuff, adn definitly wouldn't want them to revel any that havn't selected it in their profiles , i just think it would be interesting to see, out of the 600 or more members, what countrys are infact among us?

Why not post in general discussions or introductions?

I am sure there is a quicker way but I just copied and pasted the thirteen pages of the Member's List into Excel to form a flat file data base, assigned standard names to each location, then imported to a pivot table, as below.
    USA 89
    Anon 42
    Australia 16
    Canada 11
    India 11
    England 9
    UK 7
    Netherlands 5
    Egypt 3
    Scotland 3
    Argentina 2
    Belgium 2
    Germany 2
    Malaysia 2
    New Zealand 2
    Pakistan 2
    Poland 2
    Russia 2
    Spain 2
    Sweden 2
    ? 1
    Austria 1
    Brazil 1
    Britain 1
    China 1
    Denmark 1
    Estonia 1
    Europe 1
    France 1
    Gautemala 1
    Indonesia 1
    Ireland 1
    Nepal 1
    Nigeria 1
    North America 1
    Puerto Rico 1
    Singapore 1
    Thailand 1
    Uruguay 1
    Vanuatu 1
    Wales 1

I separated the UK into its nations where possible, as the Celts are very touchy. Total for all UK is 21.

Is this the breakdown among the active members list, or the total?

Did you calculate what percentage listed an actual location?

I agree. I don't have an easy way to produce those data. I don't even know how we define an active member. Just because I have my name in green moderator go-faster font doesn't mean I actually go faster. :-D
If anyone wants an e-mail of the Excel file I extracted pm me.

J - 237 out of 650. 36%. If you count Earth or Back in my Box as actual locations. They are grouped under Anonymous in my tally above. Real locations - assuming we do indeed have a member in the beautiful island nation of Vanuatu - account for 195 individuals. 30%. Some have been quite precise - most US members list their state (and Canadians their Province). Others as vague as 'Europe'.

I would have thought the percentage higher from the profiles; maybe frequent posters are more likely to share the information. What's the question mark?

I think it's about time to have a mass email sent out to everyone. The idea being to perhaps regain a few members that have wandered off. This place is going great for just over a year old. It's nothing without members and moderators, thanks everyone.

Celts come from Scotland, Ireland, Wales, Cornwall, Brittany and the Basque country.
They aren't really touchy: I was just doing some sub-liminal Celtic promotion.

i understand. i was jsut being touchy lol ,

using microsoft works i have come up with

    Look At My Shiny graph
obviously its very scientific, if you like, round em all up to the next number, not very scientific, against all rules but i won't tell if you don't

    basicly

    1 = 0.4%
    2 = 0.8
    3 = 1.3
    5 = 2.1

the rest you should be able to see....

I find the graph acceptable, as you have coloured Scotland slice an appropriate blue.

and Holland is orange, you've really thought about this haven't you? :-D Hurray for the orange lion! 8)

We seem to have a very international public, which is unique in cyberland. I've never before seen a big forum with over 50% from outside the US.

    hey, back again.

was just wondering, after seein a post in general discussion, if you have any more figures for the International population here.

as you said, the forum is growing alot, way more members (even if some are spammers) so perhaps theres a more varried community!?

    just wondering.

As is often the case with technical subjects we are presented with an unfortunate choice: an explanation that is accurate but incomprehensible, or comprehensible but wrong.

Ophilote submitted the list in which the members would not sum up more than 200.
But the tab at the bottom shows that there are 3000 or more registered users.
    How's that.

that's because if you check the date that those figures were submitted, it was about 2 years ago...

you'll notice in one of the very early posts by Ophiolite that there were 13 pages of users on the member list back when this was done.

now theres 54. then lets also not forget that not everyone puts down a location, or tells the truth about their location.

Click on the Memberlist tag at the top then sort by location, that should give you the answers BUT this could be anything from the name of a village/town to a continent. I think theres about 57 pages.

    Hey that's true.
I have seen many funny locations too.
But can the site admin not track down the locations.

I'm sure if you were to pay for about three hours work it could be done,

I do not think there is an electronic way of doing it though. As to the accuracy I think it's pretty good - we do have access to IP addresses and some indicate the country that the server is in.

Is there not such technology which could track down the modem number or even ISP.
Does the site admin manipulate it through an ordinary P.C. or he has some complex machine.

If such information is available it is private and confidential as it gives personal details so it would not be released on an individual basis, it may be that even using this info in a general sense would also require permission from each member. - As I said I have no reason to assume it is innacurate, you could ask Mr U (site Admin) or take the data on the pages I indicated and process it for your self, you do not need to take all 57 pages you could just process the first and last 2 plus 2 from the middle to give you an approximation of makeup.

I can actually use a GeoIP database to see the locations of all the members down to the city anywhere in the world. It's more or less accurate. I just have not found the time to do so. Someday perhaps....
Pleased to meet you. Hope you guess my name
