Many of you may have noticed that I have placed topics in each sub forum of "The Science Forum" asking you to nominate a moderator for that sub forum. This is pretty much my last attempt at trying to gain some new moderators that will not be overworked trying to manage the entire site.

We have tried as a group to get moderators for the site in the past only to have the process end in somewhat of an undecided state. This will not happen again. The goal will be to gain one moderator for each sub forum and nominate another moderator should the first one prove absent for too long or unable to perform their duties. This one to one relationship of sub forum and moderator should provide a nice light work load and a better experience for all whom are involved. So please put some thought in to your nominations and post them in the appropriate sub forum. You can not nominate yourself.

    Thanks,

    IS

Pleased to meet you. Hope you guess my name

Hmm. There are only a few on this site who are are not trolls. And how can we assume that any person in these sub forums will not hold stronger views of one side of a debate than another? dayton for instance would make a great mod in the religion sub forum. But would stick towards favouring religion, thus biasing his role. Mitchell may do the same. verzen in the opposite court.

I understand your need to have moderators, but really with the majority of members being trolls, or one sided debate people, how can we find a good moderator?

Nowadays I never really much visit anymore because of the tripe that has filled this forum, its a shame really, and I know its the same opinion with many older members.

I once wanted to be moderator, and I probably would moderate something if given the choice. Not being allowed to nominate myself though I can't really imagine this reality, and with the lack of decent members, I can't say anyone would be fit for the job really. Apart from the few.

The few I think mostly being KALSTER, marnixR, Obviously and sunshine warrior.

On a plus note, I think it will be interesting to see who gets nominated, and with you in control of who gets carried forward, I'm sure your better judgement will give us a good mod. I look forward to a cleaner, more enjoyable 'thescienceforum'.

    I agree with marnixR.
The most important thing I have learned about the internet is that it needs lot more kindness and patience.

It sounds like the illustrious "O" has made the decision to leave almost immediately. He made a post to a new member just yesterday welcoming him into the fold, and now today he's bidding us averderci. Curious...

Hmm. Now you mention it that is a tad fishy. (No pun intended marnix).

According to my personal understanding, it's a person who enjoys getting other people's goats more than they are actually interested in discussing the topic at hand.

Many trollish behaviors have appeared here, it is true, but I disagree rather heartily with 425 that the majority of the members here are trolls. There are many of them, but they are not the majority.

Having more trolls is the price to pay for greater leniency in general by the moderation staff. If you want less trolls you're also going to have to accept more interference by the moderators, and we've had several people who have still complained about the level of moderation being too high.

I imagine this is something the new moderators will have to decide on once they are all appointed.

Sure, so long as your puppet has at least 200 posts and your IP's don't match

I didn't even get a chance to start my campaign! Does the general discussion really need moderating though? :?

Yes I think it does. It gets viewed often and I think that someone should watch it and moderate it, and I believe that person to be you! :-D

I'd think that for some of the less trafficked forums, one moderator for several of them would be more practical.

or none at all, with a sticky thread in "Site Feedback" like the "report spam" one to flag altercations up ?

I think in order to be fair you should have moderators moderating the moderators and moderators moderating the moderators moderating the moderators.

Just a question. Do mods. have the option to be hidden? Because ever since the new mods. came online there are more hidden users. There are three presently now, I know one is you IS..

I am another one. I guess I am a bit embarassed by how much time I spend on here.

for starters, ALL members have the option to mark themselves as 'hidden'
i myself had that box ticked until i became a moderator, at which point i thought it was only fair that people would see when i was around

also, i can categorically state that i've seen the names of Dishmaster, Guitarist, Harold, Janus, mitchellmckain, paralith, Robbie and SkinWalker on the list of on-line members at some time or another, so i doubt whether the higher number of hidden members is caused by moderators sneaking around

I would like to say that I condone and feel bad for your search. Finding a good mod that can bring down the hammer but still present fairness is difficult in a subculture run by 14 year old hipsters (aka. the internet). A good moderator, once found, can make or break the subsection they administer.

Good luck guys; I'm liking this forum already, I'll probably be sticking around.
