It was actually L. Ron Hubbard who apparently parlayed his science fiction books into a religion. Something based on Isaac Asimov probably would have been better. _________________ Science without religion is lame, religion without science is blind. -- Albert Einstein

That Hubbard guy is a genius He must've had a great laugh when people first started throwing money at him. If he at least came up with a better story it wouldn't have been that strange, people believe in the weirdest things. But yea Lord Xenu.. |

Agreed.
Just been watching a BBC Panorama documentary on Scientology, man those people are creeps.. They literally spied on the BBC film crew that was making the documentary.
Their main point seemed to be that they want to be called a religion instead of a cult. Well I don't see the difference between those words, the word 'religion' isn't some gold-plated certificate of value in my book. If astrologers want to be recognized as a religion, then invent some gods, write a book and add yourself to the list. What I do object to is that in a lot of countries religions have a special legal status, so it actually means something to be recognized as a religion by the government (tax exemption, legal protection etc).
As mentioned in the documentary, what these cults/religions/whatever want is to seem powerful and influential, so people are scared into treating them with respect. I have no reason to fear astrology nutjobs, so I feel unhindered to openly speak my mind about them. But I wouldn't speak openly to a crowd of fanatic Christians/Jews/Muslims etc, people get killed for being honest about fanatic religious crap. Scientology wants to be added to that list, and their trick is to scare people by intimidating them. Well the best reaction is just to laugh at their crazy stories and move on. |
