I have always called myself an atheist, but I am not sure weather I am.
my beleafs: I do not beleave in god, but there is a small (very small) chance that he does exist, but the same goes for unicorns and faries (in my opinion please dont flame)
just because i cant disprove it doesnt make it real.
so I dont outright say god doesnt exist I merely claim that he most likely doesnt exist, therefore I wont devote my life to him.
(allso I find many religeons self-contradictory)

allso the name Athiest carries a bad air, people instantly assume me to be ignorant and assume I hate anyone with a faith.

'if one man beleaves in fairies its called madness
if one million men beleave in faries its called religion'- Richard Dawkings
(but i think he was quoting someone when he said it...but who cares)

As long as one does not go around open supporting Dawkins or Charman Mao, I don't see why people would think that. But of course if you are a vocal supporter of atheism then you have got to expect people to be at least as annoyed at you as people are annoyed at those religious who vocally support their religion.

I have a difficult time understanding how a country where Stephen Hawking lives could display such attitudes. England must be a curious place to live. Never been there, but I do watch a LOT of English mysteries.

Its not like that in the US that I have ever experienced. Religion is generally nobody's business but your own. But of course in a small town or area that is VERY predominantly one religion one does tend to experience being left out of the human race if one doesn't belong. I know that is true of some small towns in Utah (Mormon) and I suspect it is true of some small towns in the deep south (Christian).

Dawkins himself says there is no such thing as an atheist just agnostics with differing levels of atheism. He ranked agnostics as being of 5 types, the 5th type being the most closely related to atheism. Dawkins himself admits he is a level 4 agnostic. I consider myself to be a level 3 or 4.

I think that qualify you to be an atheist. In my opinion Atheism does not mean refuse to believe, but rather see no reason to believe that God exists.
If there is any religion that would cope with modern scientific needs, it would be Buddhism
