Here is a religious question I got in a debate over with my wife and her aunt.

If you cloned a human, would the cloned human be born with a soul? And how would you know?

They said that since God breathed souls into humans, that the person made by cloning would not have a soul.

I said that since no one knows what a soul is, we could not know either way, but I do believe we do have a soul, and that the cloned human would have a soul as well. If it didn't, it would be incapable of showing love.

To which they said they were unsure if love was an emotion or if it was caused by a soul.

To which I replied if you believe in god, you believe love comes from god and not chemical reactions because God, in christianity, IS love.

So what do you all think about this debate?

I think if we were able to make a artificial human it would not be capable of any emotions. Because emotions are a human trait, a artificial human would not be the same as us it would be like a highly intelligent robot . A man made man would have mutations and probably would not live very long anyways.

I don't believe in souls and I am pretty certain emotions is nothing more than chemical reactions. Either way, a life is a life. It doesn't matter if it's cloned, it'll still be a life.

well said and to add, a cloned human is not an artificial human.
It is just an exact duplicate of the original. (a perfect twin)
A logician saves the life of a tiny space alien. The alien is very grateful and, since she's omniscient, offers the following reward: she offers to answer any question the logician might pose. Without too much thought (after all, he's a logician), he asks: "What is the best question to ask and what is the correct answer to that question?" The tiny alien pauses. Finally she replies, "The best question is the one you just asked; and the correct answer is the one I gave."

Why don't you believe in anything beyond what you can see, hear, taste touch and smell? There are millions of accounts of spirits. MILLIONS. And a lot of them are unexplained. Why are spirits so cold? And can go throguh walls? Seem familiar with some low K experiments?

If spirits are very cold we need a lot of them to help reduce Global Warming.

All don't seem to survive close scrutiny. If you happen to communicate with one, please tell it to show itself to me.
familiar with some low K experiments?
    Does K stand for credibility?

I believe in things that make sense, that's all. I'm not just limited by things I can see, hear etc. Spirits, souls, demons, elves doesn't make sense to me, sorry.

Open your minds, thats all you have to do. Prove to me that they don't exist. You can't, and you never will because they do.

Prasit if you want to take the mickey, go to sciforums, you'll get the response you want there.

Obviously, things that make sense? Why don't you meet up with me sometime, and I'll proove their existence, but you'll have to come to me .

surely SV, you should know better thanto use this old canard : apart from a small number of limited cases it is logically impossible to prove that something doesn't exist
this applies specifically to ghosts, spirits, souls and god, where the nature of the entity in question is ill-defined

in short, if you insist that someone proves the non-existence of any of those, you'll have the satisfaction of coming out a winner; however, it will be a pyrrhic victory - ultimately meaningless and self-defeating

You know what, you win! Your right and no-one will ever question any of your thoughts and ideas. Your all the most intelligent set of people on the planet, who will contribute greatly to the human race, you'll revolutionise science the same way our forefathers did and change the way we look at the world forever. Everything will go your way, and I hope everyone will love you for contributing so much.

PS Obviously, whats that about mysteries we were talking about not long ago?

You said about those who go about solving mysteries, compared to them who just talk about them. So lets solve them . Theirs obviously something happening that is unexplainable or we wouldn't be here talking about it. The best scientists solve mysteries. We've talked about this in another thread somewhere, I'm sure you can recall.

There is no such thing as a soul. What we call a soul both the learned behavior we have from our environment as well as the biological behavior we got from our parents.

Actually, Since you believe in a soul can you explain to me exactly what a soul is? OR at least what you think it is? Remember it isn't proven whether ghost actually exist and if they do exist I personally believe that they are merely just ripples in time.
