Science is a pretty good defense against faith. It produces tangible results that everyone can see everyday, and everywhere.Quote:

It is like the coronavirus - it seems we may never be rid of faith. But we have the truth of science to fight off most of the nonsense.
So why does faith appear to grow stronger the more it's discredited by science?
The God Delusion hasn't done much to counter faith, much to the chagrin of Dawkins..
Even 911 seemed to harden it.
I suppose you could argue that the child abuse by priests and nuns in Ireland has diminished the Catholic Church, but only to the benefit of evangelists and others.
But, I hear some say, religion helps keep the little people under control, and the scientists are more like the elite.

Faith is like a movie out of Hollywood - sit back and suck it in. Often fantastical, and readily believable to many. And without reading a single word. Much like all the religions.
Just listen to the charlatans. They also tell fine, fantastical stories.
I think majority of the believers (if they are capable to make their personal choice) stick to religion for reason of fear of death and suffering. Or experiencing some unjustice. Fear of death without any kind of afterlife or resurrection is not a something that a regular human mind can tolerate. In minority of people (the believers) there is also striving for something transcendental and supernatural.

I remember when 'he' was to be feared and would be wrathful.
Like I'm old enough to remember when teachers at faith schools would carry out 'gods will'.
Boys would be led into a room with just the teacher and asked to lower their pants and be whipped with a cane.
A boy was meant to enjoy it because it was for Jesus, and on one occasion it happened to me.
Even though I hadn't done anything much wrong I just had to accept it as normal.
I'm almost sure that not only religious establishments, but schools at one time acted like up front places for child abuse.
