It's grammatically correct to use an upper-case 'g' if we are refering to God as a person, i.e. the god of Abraham.
Why do you choose to use the lower-case?

    I guess I'm petty.

I'm not sure what you mean here, if it is the quote regarding upper and lower case g's, then my response was clearly aimed at captaincaveman, as you can see.

i still dont get what the big deal is with g or G. we all know what were talking about. surely.

lowercase "g" means that god isn't a person.

Highercase G means that he is.

Some atheists use the higher case "G" in respect. I, on the other hand, have found few theists to respect. ;p

I always thought God was a reference to the Christian god where God is his/her/its name, and god was a generic term for any god such as Apollo Allah etc.

Hopefully I'm not abusing my power here, but I think this one should be branched off as well before it takes over the other thread. And since you guys apparently want a short discussion about it.

And actually, no, as a sign of respect to "god" it's always upper case. I've never heard that interpretation of "god" and "God" before.

    You got it!

To add further: I'm not sure why it's respectful to put "God" in upper case. Since it's disrespectful to atheists in a way (refusing the possibility there isn't a god), but also to thests (with "god," refusing to accept the possibility there is) simply by using upper or lower case letters :/.

I say, hell with it, and stop nitpicking jan. :P However, question: Why is "god" usually in upper case anyway?

well you usually put peoples names as upper case, but as were talking about a hypothetical thing. i dont think it counts. And surely god isn't his name is it? Wasn't he/she named in the old testament or something?

He only gave the name "I am that I am," the best translation guesses have ended up similar to Yaweh (Jehovah isn't how it's supposed to be said in english).

However we come to a grammar problem. "god" is, technically, a title, so it should be upper cased. However, since it's a hypothetical title, philosophically it shouldn't. :|

We use upper-case when we refer to God as the person, force, or personality, and lower-case when talking about God.
As captaincaveman pointed out, it doesn't really matter as long as the context is clear.

Why have you put me as the threadstarter?

because I couldn't find who to put as the thread starter. :/

But, grammar wise, that thing has to be proven to be a persons name or something else in order to be a proper noun. noun wise, "god" is a "thing" since "god" isn't his name. Unless used as a title as explained above, but you still get a problem.

And I bet you are an expert as to what 5 year olds can do...

    EDIT:
For those who wonder where I got the quote from, I responded but in the time I was composing this Ezra obviously retracted it or a mod did.

Tell you what, from your poor grammar and lack of punctuation, I suggest it is you who are a few keys short of a full set.
