    I'm fairly sure that, in both senses, yes; the word synagogue refers to both the building and the community. I would imagine the same was true of the temples dedicated to Greek gods, etc. A practical application of metonymy. Or did you have another sense of "church" in mind?

    Huh? What has that got to do with the original question? Separation of church and state is, as far as I know, a pretty modern and still pretty rare concept.

    Are you thinking of a state which is a purely church-based thing like Vatican City State?
