I often hear that religion is the cause of the world's problems, that all war's are a consequence of religion and waa waa waa

but you know it is the nature of man to believe in a higher power, i have yet to meet a person who could truly comprehend the size of the universe, to think that such a vast concept exists without some kind of controlling force is by nature incomprehensible.

so we create gods, and we go to war about them and whatever.

however it has reached a point that the majority of the religous population accepts other religions. sure a few fundamentalists will crash a plane
but the overall message is that it would be great if we could all just get along and be nice to people for a change. and you know that message really strikes me.
if the whole world could get along the world would be such a nice place to live in.

so religion is here to stay no matter how much we try to disprove it, and i say let it live because it produces a great message

    everything is mathematical.

There are some pretty big generalizations here but I think that your comment about religion being here to stay is right on the money. But the real reason such a realization is so important is because it is only when you understand this and put the stupid idea of doing away with religion in the bin where it belongs -- only then can you start on the important task of discerning between healthy/benign religion and the kind of religion that really is a disease and is responsible for things like 9/11.

Even that is a over-generalization because this is not a black and white issue. It is really a matter of finding the unhealthy types of thinking and practices that can be found in most of the major religions and fighting against them. What the militant atheist and "anti-theist" doesn't seem to understand and is really foolish about is that by lumping all of religion together they are only obstructing such efforts and contributing to the unhealthy aspects of religion themselves with their own unhealthy types of thinking.

It is nature of man to believe in something higher than himself because his true nature is to find an easy way out to everything. When I can't comprehend the universe and the purpose of existence I find solace it believing that something above me exist and is governing everything and that I only need to let him continue doing what he knows best. I hold this belief tightly because without it I will lose my comfort/solace hence I'm even willing to go to war to fight my belief. Finding other people who also share the same views strengthen my belief and justify it as truth. Feeling proud of knowing the 'truth' I'll tell people around me about this 'truth' saying to them that they're blind and here is the 'truth'. Religion is here to stay as long as we need them to feel secure about the world we live in and the world to come.

I see this argument as a typical pre-concept of people, which never showed a real interest to understand the bible, and the reason of certain things, why they happened. If i explain you, what Gods intent was, and the reason, these things happened, you will certainly come with the next argument, and then the next. And the final will be, no outcome, or change of opinion. I am quit sure, you have made up your mind already, don't you ?

i would have to disagree with the idea that 'religion' is the main cause of war. pol pot, attilla the hun, Hitler, hirihoto (sp), alexander, wilhem II, and man, many others were not christian and all started wars which killed of far more people than the crusades ever did.

it is just easier to blame religion.

    I quite agree.

It's obvious that strong faith coupled with any ideology can cause disasterous outcomes. When it comes up to the point of "the end justifies the means", we all know what evil will emerge as is exemplary in history.

People in religion get on fine of all different religions colours and creeds. Well to be honest only intelligent people who have religion. The dumb ignorant ones are the ones that cause it.

So its not religion that causes wars, they're just an excuse stupid people use to get away with what they want.

Ooh. I never would have noticed that not 4 months ago...

Yes, but then again, given that there is strong positive correlation between atheism and IQ, you could argue that religion makes them stupid.

A week ago I would have said that this is a correlation that is getting weaker by the minute, but today I am less sure of this. People keep thinking of dumb and dumber sorts of religion. Thus today it is my conclusion that is the overall effective IQ of mankind that is plumeting. I mean, perhaps the innate ability is improving, but what good does that do when people habitually avoid using that ability.

I think religion is there to give man the feeling of safety and absolution. We like believing that whatever happens, it's not really our fault; that there is a supernatural power lurking in another dimension which controls fate, destiny, and everything else. As for the wars, true there have been religious wars, but most wars did not have a general basis on the grounds of religion. Usually, they are sparked by greed, a need for righteousness, and for the sake of conquering itself.

Eh? Sorry? Me no speak the celtic. No can do missy.

Tritai. Its hard, and its tough but some of the human race grow up and take responsibility for their actions and not blame everything on some God. When you look at it that way, I can understand why 'God' calls his followers 'children'.

Tch, tch, Stephen. And here you are extolling the virtues of "self help". Go look it up on Google! :-D

And when I said "We like believing that whatever happens, it's not really our fault", i didn't mean EVERYONE. And i'm assuming you consider yourself as part of "some of the human race grow up and take responsibility for their actions and not blame everything on some God" ?
