Yes, that time of the year comes around again. And how can something so magical become so, so . . . can't think of a word just yet ! I'm talking about Christmas. I don't need to relay the whole story of the origins of the Christian festival as I'll assume we are all aware of it.
BUT, does the message and magic of Christmas wear off as we get older OR has the whole festive season changed ? It's difficult isn't it because into my 50's now and yes, policemen and women, teachers, and social workers do look younger than they ever did to me ! Our perception must change as we age and perhaps our tolerance levels do to ? But Christmas ?
Is it just my age OR do Christmas adverts start appearing earlier than ever ? (if you order a 3 piece suite in September you can have it delivered in time for Christmas!) Do department stores have Christmas decorations up earlier than ever ? Do stores have Christmas music playing over our heads earlier than ever ? (I'm sure John Lennon would cringe if he heard 'Happy Xmas War is Over' played in a store in the latter part of October.) And by sheer definition when would you expect the January sales to begin ? January perhaps ? uh uh, they have started in November this year as stores compete for sales during our present economic climate ! Oh and why not wash it all down tonight with a box of lager while you can buy 3 boxes for the price of one !!!
Okay, I've calmed down a little now. So c'mon, is it just me or has Christmas been lost somewhere ? I will wish you ALL a Happy Christmas but I'll post that message in the later part of December if that's okay with everyone![]()
