    Hi guys/gals.

Please can I have some info on the differences and what is meant by Intelligent Design and intelligent design. I can remember seeing it on a post a while back but I can't remember which thread it was part of. Google doesn't bring up the info I want.

    Thanks
    Chris

The only use of this distinction that I am aware of has been made by me. My contention is that there are elements of the Universe that hint at deliberate manipulation: most notably the fitness of the Universe for life and the apparent dependence of this fitness upon some critical values of a handful of fundamental constants. If this is other than coincidence, or random chance, or application of weak anthropic principle, then it is evidence for the working of an intelligence. I call that intelligent design, all lower case. It is a subject area that seems to me to be worthy of investigation - and several notable scientists appear to agree, though they do not use my terminology.

Intelligent Design, on the other hand, is Creationism in another guise. It does not apply scientific methodology. It makes a pretense of doing so. It is intended to win over creationist sceptics with a pretence of doing science. ID would only suceed if Creationism was 'proved'. In contrast an investigation of intelligent design would be successful either if it were falsified, or if substantial evidence was found in its favour.

If you find that others are using this distinction in this way I should be interested to hear about it. Then I could stop talking to myself.

Sure, "intellegent design" is like what you find in automobiles and airplanes. Creationist often imagine that living things are no more alive than cars and planes but are just wind up robots created by a great watchmaker in the sky. Perhaps this explains why they seem to think that everyone should behave like the wind up robots of this god of theirs. Frankly, I would rather be a live monkey than a dead robot.

"Intellegent Design" is an aggressive attack on modern science which declares that if something is superficially dressed in the appearance of science then it can be considered science even if it completely contradicts the methodology and purpose of science. If this attack succeeds it will result in a complete abolition of any distinction between theology and modern science and thus return us to the dark ages where religious people would settle disputes using politics to get their opponents burned at the stake as heretics rather by taking a look at the observational evidence, and we all know how successful that was in finding the truth about things.

P.S. Just so you know and don't get the wrong idea. I happen to be a Christian and I love theology. I just happen to love science as well and so I am very offended by the attacks of blind ideological Christians upon science.

I've thought along the same lines, but from the other direction. It seems to me life's ultimate destiny to Bang, in the Biggest way possible, a fresh universe in our own image of greater fertility.

The term "intelligent design" is alright, but sure to be confused with the other. Also, it suggests omnipotence, when perhaps all that's necessary is "meddling". A ploughsman does not intelligently design the leveling of the field.
