i write fiction, and I was thinking of an alien race that had less of a tolerance for patience than humans do. Yet I realized that would give them serious drawbacks, especially for a supposedly super tech advanced race (they have tech that is really high end, like magic level almost).

How would they ever have the patience to build that stuff? So the only way I could figure to make them smart enough to do it, and still put the time in, is with absolutely PERFECT eidetic memory. Which means if they saw something once, they don't have to see it twice, EVER.

So the most I figure they would have issues with is redundancy, since they would be willing to put the time in building stuff, but if someone were to be redundant with them, in any way, shape or form, it would likely annoy them.

They would have SOME patience, but to balance their lower patience threshold, they would need really good memory to pick up things the first time, instead of the second or third time. At least with visuals, physical learning they still need to hone their muscles and hands at.

Anything I overlooked? Or does anybody have good ideas on this? The point is, to make them not ACT just like humans in every way, even though they will look similar and have a lot in common in other ways.

On second though, they would have to be OK with redunancy, otherwise they couldnt get ANYTHING done.

I would say they would prefer change, or movement to things staying stagnant.

So an allien's ideal house would have a lot of movijng stuff in it, always moving. A nonmoving wall, no matter how pretty, is too boring for them.

No patience you say? Can you imagine how nice it would be to undertake a long journey without ever hearing "Are we there it?"

You would think a totally impatient race would need to have everything done immediately, could they even wait for water to boil? How about long term pregnancy? Sex?.... wham , bam, thank you m'am. Fastest orgasm in the cosmos.

Perhaps they do like many humans do when they are bored...find ways of entertaining themselves and being great multitaskers get things done in what looks like non stop singing, dancing, having sex, playing whoville instruments or what ever else they do even as they are busy working on boring stuff.

ADHD aliens. That should be fun.
They would certainly require faster than light travel.

I thought this thread was about impatience.

What adaptive pressures take place to evolve an alien race that has what we consider abnormal? I guess any one of their population that has patience would be considered to have a mental disorder.

The aliens build robots that design and make everything for them that way they don't need to wait, the robots do it quick and without error.

I was not thinking of a total lack of patience, since that won't work I have figured out.

I do like the idea of them needing things to be moving all the time, just to keep them not bored.

You could have a house full of beautiful artwork, and they would prefer one without it, so long as it had a lot of moving stuff.

Though preferably, ideally, they would like one with lots of colors and moving stuff. I dunno, you could put spinning stuff everywhere along the walls.

It might give a human vertigo, but it actually makes the aliens feel entertained.

Well, they probably wouldn't be reading your novel.

Hmm. That's really interesting. I want to read that!

If the alien race have extremely low amount of patience, what would give them the ability to slowly develop those creations and technology?
Well, apart from an eidetic memory, they could also be strongly motivated perfectionists. This sense of motivation and the desperate need to make things perfect would thus cause them to research and research and research in order to improve themselves. They want to be perfect, you see. They know of their eidetic memory. They know they have no (or barely any) patience. Hence, they'd want to do things fast. Do things quick. "Oh, we need to find a cure for this? Let's dispatch 5000 scientists and get it done and over with!" and they bar themselves in a lab (or many labs, doesn't matter) only having toilet breaks and their three meals. This alien race could have the capability to sleep/rest much less than humans. This would mean that they will be able to spend and concentrate their time and energy into discovering these new things.

Another thing is that, since they're so technologically advanced, they could have built robots to help them do all the basic things. What would be the point of these aliens then? Well, their brains.

Would all of these aliens contribute their minds into researching and developing technology? Doubt so.
There would be some that wants to perfect their technology and thus works hard doing research.
There would also be some that wants a perfect lifestyle of fun, games and party. A perfect life of nothing but leisure. These would be the scums of the race, of course.

Basically, what new feature they would have, is to be perfectionists. Die-hard perfectionists.

Good reply, as it gives them a psychological reason for being super advanced. Although I would tend to think that they would still want to do so

Good reply, I like that it gives a psychological reason for why they are so advanced. And human interaction with them would be interesting, if not hilarious.

I would suppose they could also design some pill or something, for them to act more 'normal' around other races, but when it wears off, they might seem kinda weird to humans. With the pill, they could act more human, as it would increase their capacity for patience beyond what it normally is.

Along with all that, they will totally lack one human emotion. Sadness. They have no ability to feel sadness, or even regret, or guilt.

That said, they still are able to realize if they did something that was not wise, and they are capable of goofing up. If they do, they just try to get things right the next time. They just don't get depressed or sad about it.

But thanks to their eidetic memory, and drive for perfection, mistakes are less likely than say, humans.

Like Eugene said, they could have various factions that decided just what perfection meant to them.

The scary one would be one that considered conquering the known universe their goal for perfection. Assuming they had enough scientists to help them do it.

But that won't be the premise of my story, it's actually more exotic than that.

The aliens want sugar, because it gives them superpowers.

It's illegal though, just like illegal drugs are on Earth. So two of them go to Earth to get some human help to traffic the stuff.

It's basically interstellar drug dealers with drugs that give them superpowers, not high like humans get. Humans only factor in because they have lots of the stuff, and the aliens don't, sugar is not even native on their world.
