ive just been wandering... you know that there has been movies being brought out about robots and ive heard that countries are testing robotic weapons that did not need controls. would these be able to develope their own mind if you will and try to take over the world. if so how possible would this be and whats the worst that could happen.
probably a stupid question.... |

We can currently barely make a car that can navigate streets and stop at a red light. Making a robot without controls, that is used to kill people, would be very foolish right now. _________________ Forget all that you know, achievements can only be accomplished by starting from nothing and selectively applying facts that are purely objective and absolutely necessary.

Er... Cold Fusion, we already have such weapons and deploy them routinely. Think about it.
Autonomous weapons will not develop their own minds, but they do promote a morally detached "second mind" within the military. We've been expanding this alternate mind for some time already, from the top down.
A paradox faced by our forces, is that demoralizing enemy soldiers including their nation AKA "shock & awe" AKA "terrorism" is really effective. For example many Americans and probably most generals believe that blanketing some civilian centers in Japan with fire and radiation, ensured total capitulation. Law enforcement calls this "pain compliance". It all boils down to the same thing, which is doing something nazty to make an individual, leadership, or nation, focus on its own suffering and roll over in fear.
It's a paradox because you've got to play the bad guy to do it. We would like to dissociate ourselves from this psychopath's tactic, yet employ it freely.
On the ground military demonstrations of inhumanity are expensive in terms of screwed up soldiers and moral outrage at home (e.g. Vietnam). Say we want to burn and blind a city's worth of civilians, men, women, children. Well, we could take a captured area and round the people up to have acid dropped into their eyes, torches applied to their skin, and so forth, as a demonstration. But oh that would be inhumane. We'd have to look into their eyes. So the thing to do is make it impersonal. Better firebomb from where we can't see what we're doing. Same suffering inflicted, but we come out clean. So how can we impersonally inflict demoralizing, ugly suffering on a smaller scale? For example where we can't avoid face-to-face encounter?
Enter the robot. |

Like what? He said "did not need controls"; the predator is human controlled, and so is S.W.O.R.D.S. A mousetrap is a simple robot. That's a lot dumber than our seeking missiles and 99% automated targeting systems, like on a destroyer. Yeah I know what you mean, like a walking thing with guns for arms. |
