Okay it's got to do with "THE BIG DATE" 12/21/2012. On this day according to the Myans and confirmed thru modern science. My question isn't about the end of the world, by the way.

The galactic equator, dark rift, womb of the universe, what ever you may call it. Does any one have info on what is there? What does it consist of?
How long will our solar system pass thru it? Any info would help.

I have heard it's a massive cloud of dust. Heard it was where stars are made. I've heard that when we pass thru there in 5 or so years that the dust is so dense it may actually greatly dim light from the sun to earth ruing crops and what not, no bright full moons, etc. I don't even know if anything I've heard has strong or any scientific basis.

Please help out a truth seeker! - thanks

Modern science has not confirmed anything at all special about this date, or even this century, in relation to the Galactic equator.
It is true that the position of the solar system varies in relation to the galactic equator over a period of several million years. The galactic plane tends to have a higher proportion of dust and molecular clouds within it. (These are the site of star formation.) There are also probably slightly more stars within the galactic plane than some distance outside it. More stars mean more possibility that one will pass sufficiently clos to the sun to dislodge comets from the Oort cloud and send them in towards the sun where they might collide with the Earth.
Crossing this ill defined plane will take a few million years, so to assign the start of the crossing a specific date is just simplistic nonsense.

And the biggest load of bull I ever heard. JEHEEEEHEEEESOOOOOOSSSS FUCKING H. CRIST (riding on a chainsaw)!!

Just so you get an impression how "dense" a galaxy is: if for some unknown reason Andromeda and the Milky Way collided by tomorrow morning the number of collision of stars would equal ZERO (or relatively close to it) and you would not realize it until both passed through each other. And this would take a couple of million years. According to astronomers the first real reaction = formation of new stars would happen way after both basically went through each other like two flocks of birds.

So you are a seeker of the truth???? Welllllll, then don't believe everything that some moron tells you just because some really, really, really, really arbitrary point in time (for the Jews btw this date will be something like the 27th Shlomo in the Year 5968 or thereabouts, the Muslims will call this the year 15umpteen andsoonandsoforth. So tell me, which one is the valid date? ) just by coincidence happens to make a nice string of integers!!

    Foxtrott
    Uniform
    Charly
    Kilo

And if you take the Gregorian Calender, who tells you that today really is the 15th of October 2007. After all, we don't even know if the starting date i.e. baseline is correct. And in 1582 they just skipped 11 days to make Easter fit with the actual date in the calender, what about them apples??

And just for your reference: on this day NOTHING out of the ordinary will happen. The world will keep on turning, the galactic constants will be constants even on 13/10/2012, DA LORD will not be in da house to chill with his homies, and shure as friggin' fuck NONE (and I will stress this once and for all and for all those brain-amputees out there):

    Gimme a N!...................N

    Gimme an O!...................O

    Gimme a N!......................N

    Gimme an E!......................E

of these obscure gobbledigook from some obscure Majan prophecy (I wanna know where those bitches get their informations from? I mean there are only three codices with Majan hyroglyphs left over after the Theists - thanks for that - devastated the Majan libraries and from those only a few Glyphs are deciphered. So tell me, "Toseewhatis"..can YOU read Majan cyphers?? Or from which doubtfull website or book do you get your information??) will come true!
Not in 2012 (why 2012, why not 2121 or 2211 or 1212??) not in 3131 nor in 9999 or 6666. Please, can you spell "NEVER" for me??

Just for the sake of accuracy.

It will take considerably more than a couple of million years for the two galaxies to pass through each other.
In fact they will not pass through, but merge.
The issue that would would concern primitive lifeforms such as ourselves would be the displacement of comets from their Ooort cloud equivalent.

I think if we were to pass through a cloud in a mere 5 years time the sun's light would (even at this time) light it up making it visible to the naked eye (especially if it is dense enough to partially block the sun).
And if it were that dense it would be (even as I write) blocking out a portion of the heavens right now.

They will finally merge, but they will start some cosmic dance around each other and the first step is that (depending on the initial direction and speed of said galaxies) they will definitely pass through each other and eventually will start circling around their common center of gravity and finally form one galaxy. I had a simulation in FLASH that showed some assumed collision of two galaxies. Let's see if I can find it.

And you are of course right about the time frame, this can last up to something like 500 million years.

There is a really neat website that talks about the galactic plane in greater detail. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GUtPRyXgO0A. Visit this and you will see what all of the hype is about.
