    Whaaaat?

Given that the idea of what is and isn't beautiful or ugly varies so wildly in time and place, it seems unlikely right out of the gate.

And then there's the issue of things like facial tattoos and body piercing in lots of cultures around the world. Start with any old face or body and finish up with a total artifact.

If that were true...it would be a fair trade imo. But it isn't. Plainly.

Why would intelligence be correlated with physical appearance? What intelligence are you speaking of (IQ?) I would say no correlation, intelligence and beauty are both largely genetic.

    In a social setting:

Intelligence is better than being ugly
Sex appeal is better than being intelligent
Money is better than having sex appeal
    Nothing is better than money

Therefore by the process of backwards reasoning, in a social setting, in spite of wealth, looks and intelligence, nothing is better than being ugly. Feel better?

Hey actually I wonder about that one, thinking about it it's obviously harder to attract a mate for the ugly so wouldn't necessity play it's part in forcing them to become smarter so they can use their brains instead of looks to find a partner. But that's just basing it on the notion that the more challenging the circumstances are then the more intelligent something will become in order to adapt to the increased difficulty of the circumstances, more nurture than nature.

In my small grade-school was an ugly girl, spawn of an ugly family, and really, not all that bright.
    many years later
    while strolling the old neighborhood
    I met her
    wowie zowie
I don't know if it was cosmetic surgery, or a trick of the light, but she was a knock-out
but still, not all that bright.

Had the same thing happen to me one day. Unfortunately, although she seemed to know me quite well, I had never taken the opportunity to learn her name. I regretted that one for a long time.

Don't know about you Sculpy, but I found that many of the girls that were labelled ugly in high school turned into fabulous looking women while in university. Nothing like maturity. I seriously recommend post secondary education.

What if the challenge is intelligence?
I guess if the challenge is a lack of intelligence, I hope I've got right your meaning here, then probarbly nature or evolution would find some other way to overcome this problem using some other kind of ability more specific to the individual challenges that a lack of intelligence could present, but really that is total speculation at best. Certainly please don't take that for anything more than the guess that it was.

No, it's just that if you're more beautiful, people pay less attention to whether you're intelligent or not.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.....why people fall in love, or makes a person beautiful has nothing to do with looks, but with personality, humor, intelligence, and other compatibilities .....beauty has nothing to do with intelligence or love....or anything else.

Actors aren't always attractive. Why? Because they need to portray a physicality that is required for a role....and they don't always require beauty....they do however require skill. *S*

Calling Stephen Hawking ugly is a bit unfair. He used to be a good looking guy, but he has a serious disorder. Fact is, he was smart long before he became wheelchair-bound.

Smart people are ugly. Brian Cox disagrees. I'm mean, I'm straight, but even I have to admit he's dreamy.

It's a fallacy that someone with a slightly different skull shape or more body hair or, in this case, less appealing features from your perspective are "less evolved".

Maybe I'm biased due to my love of classic rock, but I think he looks positively Mic Jagger-esque.

I'm saying appearance and intelligence are not related to one another.
