Well, I didn't really want to put this in the Psuedoscience section, but it doesn't belong anywhere else, so here goes.

Imagine an advanced civilization somewhere else in the universe. One that has achieved Type II status. If such a civilization was efficient enough to harvest nearly all of the energy being radiated by a star (with a matrioshka brain, for example) how would we be able to detect them? If the black body radiation from the structure is low enough, we wouldn't be able to see the star with EM radiation, and since it's just a star, we wouldn't be able to detect its gravity. Could we detect such a structure at all?

Now what would happen if many such civilizations exist? How much of the sky might be invisible to us? Could such a scenario account for some of what scientists currently think of as dark matter?

Now, I'm not saying I believe this is the case. It's just something to think about.

Well, its gonna be very hard to imagine if this is possible. We cannot claim to understand how technology of the future works. It would be like Archimedes predicting the personal computer or the nuclear bomb. Its just not gonna happen. So, if you you leave your mind open to all possibilities, then it could seem that your idea is plausible.

we could detect them by the star getting weaker and weaker as time passes because of their construction around the star.

Hmm... That's true, but what if they've been there since before we started looking? (We haven't really been looking that long.)
