So i have been doing to reaserch into the matter because my best friend thinks she has psychic abbilities, and that I might have them as well. So my question is, as a science and logic based person, is this possible? I have added some links, the first one is from someone that has written numerous books on the subject, and she references a few studies that dive into the issue. The second is a negative view against the author of the first, although less about anything to do with the psychic, and more about what she teaches. The last one is a 2004 report from the United States Air Force about the possiblity of teleportation having something to do with psychics.

There seems little likelihood that psychic abilities exist for the following reasons:
    1) No demonstration of such abilities haas ever survived a well designed investigation.
    2) Fraud and fakery have been demonstrated in abundance.
    3) Most psychic phenomena can be explained by such things as cold reading, confirmation bias, witness misinterpretation or wishful thinking, etc.
    4) No mechanism consistent with known physical laws has ever been proposed.
    5) Individuals such as Derren Brown and Janes Randi have readily duplicated the feats of so called psychics with ease and usually far greater aplomb.

If you were psychic, wouldn't you already have known what the responses to this question would be, making the post pointless?

But seriously, there is so much we don't yet know about the human mind. Perhaps it is possible. Who knows what kind of interactions are taking place at a quantum level? Perhaps somehow we are able to share info without the need for cool electronic gadgets.

The brain emits radio waves, so perhaps it can pick them up and read them too.

Let's wait another 50 years and hope we discover it is possible. It would be very useful, and exciting!

A lot of it depends on how one defines psychic ability, and as already noted above most are just garbage. Generally, it's a bunch of charlatans who prey on gullible people. With that said, there is likely a very narrow range of events which could take place, or information conveyed in some manner not yet known. That's possible, yes.

However, not the ability to move my TV with thought, or know what my grandma is thinking several thousand miles away. That whole ESP thing seems little more than 1) the human minds tendency to find patterns where none truly exist, and 2) confirmation bias, whereby we reject all of the times this DOESN'T work and give great importance to those coincidental "one time in a billion" where it does.

I already knew, this being a science community, and there being no scientific proof there would be a not so surprising NO from the community. I asked to try and start a comunication about the possiblity of things we might not understand yet.

I have read that humans only use about 10% of our brains, i like to believe that its possible to occasionally use, not more of but, a different part of our brains. I have yet to find any true scientific proof, however. Thus I am subject to side also with the community. Most people who claim to be "psychic," and by that i mean able to see the future, actually use a lot of logic and/or are good at guessing.

I feel pretty much the same with empaths. An empath is someone that can "read" people and their emotions. Some claim to be able to read emotions and past events simply by touching items others have or have a close connection with. Again, i feel this could be easily manipulated, and an intelligent person can easily figure out how a person is feeling based on how they act, and if you know the person its even easier.

On the other hand, the idea behind most phychic powers is that they are merly an extension of normal abbilites everyone has. Like your abbility to see, if you can train enough in the correct method then you can advance your sight to the "second level" and be able to see the future. Like wise someone that can sympathise with anyone can also develop the abbility to "read" others like an empath. This is all theoretical of course.

Urban myth, probably stemming from the observation that when are 'rest', maybe 10-20% of the brain is in use. Different parts of the brain have different functions; you wouldn't expect the brain areas associated with sex drive to be active while watching nature documentaries, for instance.

However, if we were able to use certain parts of our brains for 'psychic' purposes - don't you think this might be something that's selected for evolutionarily? And how exactly do you propose that we would evolve the biomechanics necessary for this purpose, but be completely unable to use it? Wouldn't this be like evolving eyes, but no optic nerves?

Indeed, this seems like the most rational and reasonable approach to this topic. While some people are better at doing these things than others, there is a clear and obvious explanation for most. I find myself in agreement with you on these points.

Also, you need to note how many times these types of people make predictions about the future which are totally wrong. Somehow, they don't seem to include those incorrect guesses in their dataset, and focus solely on (over-emphasize) those incredibly few times they actually were correct by random chance.
