I've long been fascinated with why people believe in the unexplained or paranormal. The following is an excerpt from an online article on the Connected Telegraph:

People around the world have reported being taken from their beds or from their cars by aliens.

    [...]

"The abductees, or 'experiencers' as they prefer to be known, would describe how they had found themselves on board an alien spaceship where they were subjected to (often painful) medical examination, during which sperm or ova might be extracted."

    [...]

Many had a history of sleep paralysis, a penumbra of consciousness when sufferers sense the presence of a nearby threat, either when falling asleep or awakening.

    [...]

"These findings show that it is possible to carry out good science in this controversial area, and start to discover what lies behind these unusual reports," said Prof Richard Wiseman, University of Hertfordshire.
The article concludes by asserting that how people react to sleep disorders varies with the culture. Our culture is well-educated in The XFiles and similar fictional shows and the alien theme is perpetuated.

Another interesting thing about the article is this link to a questionnaire for people experiencing sleep paralysis. If you have a sleeping disorder, or if you are simply interested in the structure of their questionnaire, take a look at it.

I took that test. It was interesting, though I couldn't tell whether it was genuinely unbiased in its study of sleep paralysis or was hoping to confirm that people who thought they'd been visited by aliens had psychic experiences as well.

But it was possible for me to describe the only paranormal event I've ever experienced myself, so that was good. I'm also wondering what they will make of my hardline skeptic attitude alongside a genuinely unexplainable event. (Well, two unexplainable events, really).
