Based on satellite images, the BBC is reporting that China is in the process of constructing over 200 new ICBM missile silos in its western Xinjiang province (1). The construction appears to be occurring in two separate locations, and represents a major increase in their strategic nuclear arsenal.

One can only wonder why China would be ramping up their strategic deterrence, since they already have sufficient global nuclear delivery systems to ensure unacceptable damage to any aggressor nation. It does however fall in line with their increasingly aggressive tendencies in the South China Sea, Hong Kong, and endless hostile activities against Taiwan (2), to name a few. This is in addition to their Belt and Road initiative (3) and debt-trap diplomacy, all being orchestrated to spread their power and influence around the globe.

The construction of Chinese military bases in distant regions of the world (4,5) is also rather telling. Considering how they conduct brutal crackdowns on internal dissidents, and others who reject their pseudo-communistic, Neo-fascist form of government, these actions represent very worrying developments for world peace.

It is up to the free world to engage the Chinese and attempt to de-escalate such militaristic activities. Allowing them to proceed on their current path will only embolden these endeavors. Combined, their activities can only be interpreted as the aggressive acts of a country preparing for global conflicts when none are planned by any "presumed" adversaries.

Free nations need to wake up to this threat and combine our efforts to counteract it. Appeasement and diplomacy are not likely to be successful based on past experience with such ultra-authoritarian nations.

MAD is main reason a cold war between major powers cannot break out into a real war. I guess China is putting U.S. on notice that it is a major power.

Agreed that this an FYI, but their aggression in the South China Sea, brutal treatment of those engaged in peaceful dissent, and their installing military bases in various parts of the world is much more than a deterrent. It is aggression pure and simple.

While we have many of these military bases as well, most are left-overs from WWII and the first Cold War, and now used to advance western goals in "trouble spots", and in the "war on terrorism" (admittedly Orwellian to some extent). But the Chinese are not under threat from multiple fronts like the West was. Sure, we have stuck our noses in many places it did not belong, but their methods of "persuasion" leave considerable questions about their long term intentions. Worse still, we are providing the funds with our business dealings to help in their efforts. It seems that the West needs a major decoupling with China in many ways. Somebody needs to throw a big wrench into that aspect.

As far as MAD goes, we must always hope that nobody gets the idea that some kind of nuclear first strike offers a winning approach to warfare. (No guarantee here.) Before it was the West (mostly US, UK and France) against the Soviets. Bringing China on-line as a global nuclear threat is most unfortunate, and unnecessary. Again, we can only hope that cool heads prevail when the situation(s) requires it.
