I'm a new member and I joined this forum because I've been thinking for many years now about an idea for a new kind of community. While I don't feel it's a particular novel idea, I do feel like it's a "duh" one. I'll try to outline my thoughts as best I can, but I'm looking for general feedback, reactions, anything really. Up until now the idea was just between my wife and I in which we jokingly called it "Dan-artica" or "Dan-obia" (My name is Dan, btw) and we'd add to it here and there as we encountered things in our lives that we felt improved things. It could be that this thing has generally been done before or discussed and if so I'd welcome that information too. Anyways, here goes nothing..

"A community of reasonable and logical people united with a common goal of improving the human condition through scientific and technological advances".

    Breaking it down:
"A community" - A geographical location of people, not a community of dispersed members. I feel this is an important distinction from current communities or societies.
"of reasonable and logical people" - The people must personally subscribe to the idea and practice of trying to live their life in a reasonable and logical way.
"united" - As in, you join the community of your own free will and believe in its goals.
"with a common goal" - All other goals seeks to satisfy this one goal
"of improving the human condition through scientific and technological advances" - This is the bulk of it and where I feel I might get some push-back. Why science and technology? I argue that scientific and technological advances have improved the human condition far greater than any other factor. Taking this further, if science and technology (S&T.. getting tired of writing it) has been the primary contributor to our advancement then we ought to organize around it. The logic is like so: Your life and the lives around you are improved by X, so then focus on X.

I'm pretty sure Danotopia has been attempted numerous times before (see here and here.) The problem with planned communities is "the best-laid plans of mice and men often go awry." Even if the founders start out rational and logical, there's no guarantee that their offspring will be too. Or that some shyster won't move in to try and take advantage of these naive hippies. Or problems will arise (weather, politics, natural disasters) that logic and rationality either can't prevent or cannot adequately address to remediate.

Utopias have long been a dream of mankind. We're still waiting.

You have to be kidding. How you people guffawed and smirked when Donald T started running, how you people guffawed and smirked when Donald T won the Nomination. Then the Coup De Grace, the Donald won the Presidency, how you people felt that moment experienced by Nicolae Ceausescu.

Here we go again, a little gentle banter to get a conversation going, then PhDemonic has to try and shut everything down.

You are right when you say not many people thought Trump would become President.
He is the rightful president altho', despite his claims to the contrary, he lost the popular vote, and this clearly annoyed him.
I don't agree with many of the ideas espoused by Trump's base but they have the absolute right to back, and vote for, their preferred candidate for the Presidency.
However, how anyone could believe Donald Trump is the best individual to represent this section of the US population is beyond me!
I am certain there are many in the US, morally opposed to lying constantly, less narcissistic, with a decent grasp of the modern world, and thus foreign policy. The "Donald" has gained amazingly high marks in each of these categories.
He is not the most effective individual to put forward the fashionable populism now a factor in Western politics.
I stress I am able to understand, and do not entirely dismiss, some of the reasons why this ideology has gained support in the Western world.

I would not care to predict when or how Trump will leave office, but I do think there is a greater than evens chance he will end up behind bars, once he leaves.

Donald T behind bars, has been on the wish list of every serious Left Wing Liberal since he won the Presidency. So far they have thrown everything at him, including the john and nothing sticks. The Mid Terms are on the way, if the Donald does well I predict a second term in office.
