WASHINGTON - President Barack Obama is asking Congress for $500 million to train and arm vetted members of the Syrian opposition, as the U.S. grapples for a way to stem a civil war that has also fueled the al Qaeda inspired insurgency in neighboring Iraq.

The military training program would deepen the Obama administration's involvement in the more than four-year conflict between rebels and forces loyal to Syrian President Bashar Assad. If approved by Congress, the program would supplement a covert train-and-assistance program run by U.S. intelligence agencies.

The Senate Armed Services Committee has already approved a version of the sweeping defense policy bill authorizing the Defense Department to provide "equipment, supplies, training and defense services" to elements of the Syrian opposition that have been screened. The Senate could act on the bill before the August recess.

So now we are going to arm the Syrian rebels who are nothing more than terrorists themselves to fight against a dictator. When are we going to learn to keep our money and troops out of this kind of problem?

You've got the Syrian war wrong. Essentially it is 3-sided. Assad government, Islamic fanatics (ISIS), and secular anti Assad. The US is trying to help the third group.

The terrorists are working alongside the moderate rebels so that any weapons those rebels get many will go to the terrorists. I can't understand how anyone would send in arms to a civil war that do not know where they will end up at. The same with money, who will actually recieve it even if the moderates are given it? Best to back away from that mess and concentrate on removing ISIS from Iraq with air power.

I really can't see helping the Iraq government when its own troops , 5 divisions, just laid down their weapons to ISIS and gave up fighting for their own homes. Over 200 were murdered by ISIS as well.

removing ISIS from Iraq with air power.

A strategy with a terrible historical track record, almost no hope of working, and subject to huge amounts of collateral damage and deaths of innocents which will turn even supportive populations against the US and the "side" we pick to support.

I'm saying to help the Iraq government to work alongside their ground forces. I really don't think America should be there at all when the Iraq military can't control its own troops.

Didn't the Syrian government gas it's own people? and now we're handing the government $$ to put down rebels? I would think the rebels would be the people against the government gassing their own people. Hardly seems like a solid investment...
I don't know the specifics of it all. I haven't been paying attention.

Not well established--it could have been a rebel group. If there's a conclusive report please post.

No. We have sanctions against the government, we are trying to back some of the rebel groups.

If your group didn't get gassed, or even better another rebel group which you are competing with got gassed, then there's no particular reason to take down the government quickly--or at least until your group is in good position to take charge.

Good point. I seriously shouldn't have weighed in. I really don't know enough. I've only seen passing headlines. Thought the Syrian government just handed over their chemical weapons, though.

No, they didn't. Assad's old friends, the russians stepped in and silenced obama's demands.

But those weapons will get taken by ISIS because they are better at stealing weapons as they have proven with the weapons America has left for the Iraqi military to use.

It doesn't seem like too hard of a choice, does it? Do we spend 500 million to meddle in Syria's affairs and probably alienate anyone who's there and doesn't hate us yet? Or save our 500 million, and let the place go on slaughtering itself?

I vote we take our 500 million and give it to Ukraine to help put down its insurgencies. At least Ukraine has shown itself to be a genuine ally. They were number 5 for sending troops to the "Coalition of the Willing", after the USA, UK, Italy, and Poland.

Syria didn't send any. The hell with them.

What EVIDENCE do you have that Trump will do anything that you assert regarding Syria?

PS, we know already that you have created a caricature of what you thing "Democrats" are and constantly beat on it, though its not at all based on reality

Right. Just like he replaced Obamacare and built the wall.

"Within the first 100 days of my administration . . . fully fund the construction of a wall on our southern border — don’t worry about it, remember, I said Mexico’s paying for the wall — with the full understanding that the country of Mexico will be reimbursing the United States for the full cost of such a wall. Okay?"

“You’re going to end up with great health care for a fraction of the price and that’s gonna take place immediately after we go in. Okay? Immediately. Fast. Quick.”

“When we win on November 8th and elect a Republican congress, we will be able to immediately repeal and replace Obamacare."
i fuckin hate the dems like obama/hillary
You could just post that, instead of all the above blather. That sentiment - hate - pretty much defines you.
