There's this guy David Brenner who claims to be selling Moon real estate. And apparently the topic of ownership is such a political hot potato that no country or business out there is willing to dispute the claim of his clients who buy Moon property.

So suppose we get out there sometime soon? Maybe a new technology emerges that makes it easier to go into space without needing a huge expensive rocket or a giant space elevator? Do you think his clients' deeds of ownership would be honored?

I'm thinking once the space frontier opens, the natural resources involved will be of such economic value that it won't be left to individual squatters. Mega-corporations will get involved. They'll hire private armies to defend their claims. Space marauders/pirates will not last long.

Which countries do you think will get the land? Do you think the UN would charter a new country to be the government up there, or let existing individual countries extend their territory into space?

Will the USA get a 51st state?

Not a chance, when we do get out there in any meaningful way, whether it be the Moon, Mars or any where else for that matter it will be a case of first there that can keep (defend that territory) and maybe some sort of international agreement between any nations capable of getting there and using the territory. What certainly won't happen is any claims from private companies or individuals given any credance or validity whatsoever.

If you really wanted to I suppose you could draw some parallels with the oceans here on Earth, no private claims of ownership would ever be upheld or honoured, yet actual nations could decide to create artifical islands.

I recommend readers consider Antarctica. We may anticipate similar treatment for 'out there'.

re Antarctica. Australia presently has "issues" with Japan whaling in "our" waters there. people want us to enforce our rights. one reason we don't is that once we do this then other nations can, and will, enforce their territorial rights. and once that happens who is to say what they can and can't do in their waters? if conservation and scientific pursuits are to be allowed unhindered by politics then the current antarctic set-up is the way to go.

I think that works, but only if we extend it one step further: Imagine if oil or gold or some similar resource were discovered in Antarctica.

The strongest current theory for the Moon's formation is that it is made of the same stuff as the Earth is, so there's likely to be some minerals under the surface. Lighter gravity, combined with no water system and less tectonic activity would tend to make it easier to dig deep holes there than it is here on Earth.

I don't think anyone really knows what we'll find, but it's certainly a possibility that it will have something people want. At a minimum it will provide a source of helium 3 for those interested in fusion power (debatable how much will actually be possible to recover, however.)
