Generously. Do not ask what our Welfare Payments amount to. If it wasn't for the crumbs from our overseas funded Mining Boom/Energy Resources we would have to Euthanise all our old people to fund illegal economic arrivals to Xmas Island. Just a mobile phone call away to spur on more economic travellers who like sea journeys. Now, I have a Question. Looking, on TV News, at the boat people arrivals, I see many young people, 18/28 years old, male, having a relieved laugh having made it to Australian control. Our Boys, sons, brothers, husbands are in the Middle East trying to establish Peace. Risking their lives on foreign soil. Fighting Terrorists intent on murdering everybody and anybody. These young Middle Eastern Males that Have left the fighting to others, too bloody dangerous, to travel to Australia, apparently think this is OK? So they will, presumedly, be drinking coffee and eating our witcherry grubs while our boys are doing their fighting? I wonder, in the circumstances, wether any of these so called refugees found the going a bit of a drag when they were taking pot shots at our boys, and laying roadside improvised bombs, and decided a change of scenery, say gum trees. wouldn't be a better option. Maybe I have become very cynical in my old age, and maybe the Future belongs to the Quick, not the dead. But something smells here, and it's not the blossom on our Gum Trees. westwind.

    What nonsense.

If I were in the position of the families of these teenagers/young men, I'd sell everything I owned or go into lifelong debt to get them out of there before they were press-ganged into the 'armed forces' of the local warlord (in the USA or Oz we'd probably call them gangs) or the violent religious zealots get a chance of brainwashing them to 'volunteer' for suicide missions.

So-called refugees? It's a bit rich for those of us so privileged to live in a peaceful, wealthy paradise to cast aspersions on those who've lived their whole lives in desperate poverty and dreadful violence. There's a saying about walking a mile in another man's shoes before judging him. You're Australian. Didn't you watch "Go Back To Where You Came From"? This is episode 1. The other episodes are a bit more 'challenging'. Episode 1 | Episode 1 | Season 1 | Go Back To Where You Came From on SBS

    illegal economic arrivals
They are not illegal. It is perfectly legal to claim asylum.

Their refugee status is determined only after investigation. And hey presto! what do we find. 90+% of asylum seekers are officially accepted as refugees - and that's in the face of laws and bureaucrats fairly well stacked against them. I'd not be surprised if the real number wasn't well over 95%.

As for illegality, those of us whose forebears came here a century or more ago can't talk. One of my great-grandfathers 'jumped ship' in one of our ports and stayed here in order to avoid an arranged marriage in America. I'm not sure he ever became an Australian citizen (and he wasn't a British subject.) Hardly compares with the ghastly circumstances of current refugees from Somalia or the Sudan or Afghanistan.

One point I'll grant you adelady. I cannot imagine any Australians jumping on a ricketty boat to go claim asylum. Ever try to force those asylum seekers who do not qualify to stay in Australia onto a commercial flight back to Baghbad? They don't just dance up the stairs blowing kisses. So, yeah, we accept most of them, it's easier that way. And if Mr. Abbot had his way he would turn the boats around. Not he himself. Not physically. No he would have some Serving Australian on a Patrol Boat express Mr. Abbots wish that they be good boys and girls now, turn your boat around, and toodle off back to Indonesia. My advice to the Aistralian Serving Members on their Patrol Boat would be to hang around for a couple of minutes, they''ll be needed to rescue the children being thrown overboard, before the burning boat sinks beneath the waves. Next move Mr. Abbot? westwind.

rescue the children being thrown overboard
Oh, for pity's sake. No children were ever thrown overboard.

Funnily enough, I remember the tv footage from a few weeks before of rioting outside an embassy. People were throwing children over a barbed wire fence in the hope that people on the other side would take care of them. And we all thought that was brave and sensible and self-sacrificing on the part of both sides of the fence.

At the time of the Tampa incident, before it all came out that the children overboard stuff was completely made up, I expressed a view which I still hold. If I thought my whole family was going to die on a sinking ship, but there was a navy ship on its way, and there was no other way for me to save them .......

I would throw my children overboard.
