I can think of two apocalyptic cults right off the bat which are/were so certain that the Apocalypse was coming that they decided to give it a little helping hand- it is easy when your cult leader tells you YOU GUYS, the pure true believers, will be among the survivors and the new ruling elite.

These are the Manson Family and Aum Shinrikyo. Are there others?

I would if you really wanted to split-hairs and be technical, you could partly add Heaven's Gate to the list. They didn't do anything to help along the apocalypse, but they believed they would be among the elite ruling class on another planet if they committed suicide before earth got "recycled".

Sure there are hundreds. What's the point? (the May 21 end of the earth/acopolypse comes to mind)

    (and Jim Jones)

(And the doofi that were going to catch a ride on Hale-Bopp)

There are always nutjobs out there, and incredibly stupid suckers who want to believe them.

Natural selection in action....it's a good thing, removing them from the gene pool.

Well, some are more dangerous than others, again, Manson Family and Aum Shinrikyo being obvious examples. Aum Shinrikyo was/is particularly sophisticated technically, developing a biological warfare capability, vs the old-fashioned physical violence of Manson and Jones. As far as "stupid suckers", also, Aum S. tended to attract some very competent doctors, biologists, and computer programmers, so a better choice of words might be "naive", if I may suggest. Aum was international, with Russian connections and a research lab in Australia, and probably better financed than Manson Family and People's Temple combined.

Aum wanted to remove many more people from the gene pool than its members, as did Manson, who wanted to precipitate a bloody race war nationwide.

Another facet of danger presented by "cults" is the obstacle, in this case, of religious freedom, which tends to hamper investigations.

True, but it also brings them above ground where we can see them.
