recently a new york state school suspended a middle school student who was wearing rosary beads. the school officials stated that the policy they have which prevents rosary beads is meant to prevent children from displaying gang symbols, and rosary beads are apparently used as gang symbols frequently(why murderers would wear something that worships a god that says not to kill is beyond me.)

i was wondering what all of our free-speach advocates have to say about the school rule, not the boys situation. it is pretty apparent that his case simply doesn't apply to the school's rule about gang symbols.

Do you not think you guys are getting a bit too caught up with all this school rules and free speech stuff. They are just kids man. hundreds or thousands of kids get sent home for different reasons involving what they are wearing every week. The fact is that a decision is made based on the specific circumstances of each incident and the region it occurs, or sensitivities or whatever else they feel is relevant to making the decision. Seems like some people read a bit in the media that is purposefully inflammatory and get their backs up without appreciating that each incident is different, and their are probably countless similar incidents all the time all over the country. Just that someone has decided to stir the pot in some cases by whining to the right wing media.

If you guys are gonna talk about the constitution every time a kid gets sent home from school you will be very busy indeed!
This is why we have uniforms! next you will all be arguing that uniforms are the beginnings of a dictatorship.

I shared it in another recent thread, but free speech is very often limited in schools. Here is a summary:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/School_...t_Amendment%29

I also want to add a +1 on harvestein's comments. He summed it up rather well.

Finally, for Dave... Google is your friend:
    http://www.foxnews.com/us/2010/06/02...-rosary-beads/

I do find it interesting, however, that the only primary agency carrying the story (at least according to my search) is Fox News. Go figure. Since when do they try to rake muck and put forth inflammatory stories? I'm shocked... shocked and appalled that Fox would do something to get people's backs up.

personally i agree with you harvestein, people are whining too much about it. from what i can tell a very rational action took place. the school saw that children were becoming violent in relation to gangs, they decided to implement anti-gang members. due to the fact that rosaries are worn by some gang members to show gang pride, they were banned. a child wore rosary beads and even though it wasn't related to gangs, they had to be repremanded in order to be treating students equally. now of course people will disagree with me, and i actually like listening to irrationalist preaching once in a while in an attempt to understand it and perhaps instill some reason into those presenting the arguements.

dave, that is quite lazy but it was also my fault for not providing a link to this, fox hasn't gotten its hands on this story yet so it hasn't been blown out of proportions for you to be able to find it easily. the information i found is here:

not that it's a biased article, i took that into consideration when reading.

It wasn't just a Fox News story, it was an AP story that was published in some other news outlets. I found the story on the USA Today web site. Also, it's interesting that a federal judge ordered the suspended kid reinstated. So, maybe there was some merit to the first amendment argument and maybe it's not just a story for some right wing nuts.

I'm sure that the first time there is a first amendment issue near and dear to the left wingers, like maybe the kid being sent home for an anti-war protest, it will be plastered all over the news.

Maybe you left wingers are getting your panties in a bunch for no good reason.

Wait, what? Who has bunched panties?

Also, your search was conducted after my own, so your results and mine will obviously differ.

A lot of stupid shit happens in the USA, but France freaking banned the wearing of religious symbols in public places. No country is immune to stupidity, and an exceptionally large and populous country like the USA is prone to a greater share of the stupidity.

    This is weird...

If we dig out everything of a gangster's body.

    we also find :

    tattoo , cigar, drugs....

    why single out rosary beads.

If school is like the contracted version of the world. Then the principal is US,

gangsters are terrorists, and rosary beads must be Iraq...... :?
