Why does the state of Oklahoma have an age requirement of 31 to be governor. Most states have the age of 30, but for some unknown reason, Oklahoma's age requirement is 31. Could someone please explain to me why Oklahoma has the exact "31" age as a requirement?

Some states have a minimum age requirement to hold any elected office (usually 21). Most states will not allow ballot access to people who do not meet the age requirement of the office they are running for.

Although, few younger folks that run for governor are elected, I'm not aware of any requirement, other than over 21yo in Oklahoma, as in many other States. If this is something new, the wording may say "over 30" which would mean 31 or older....

Welcome to this forum, are you from Oklahoma?

Thank you for the response. I am not from Oklahoma but I am a Political Science major and we are discussing State and Local Government. Of course we are on the discussion of different requirements between Presidency and Governors, such as term limits, requirements, etc.

Of course all questions are answered in class but when I asked why did Oklahoma have such an odd age of "31" exactly to be required for governorship. I have searched near and far and could not locate the answer and came here in hopes that someone could enlighten me.

Any ideas about how I could obtain this information?

    Requirements to hold office

Section Three of Article VI of the Oklahoma Constitution establishes the requirements a person must meet in order to become Governor. The Governor must be a citizen of the United States, be at least 31 years old, and have been resident of Oklahoma for at least two years.

Well, it is in there Constitution, I didn't know that myself and a bit unusual to have an odd number of years.

When researching an issue or topic, first I suggest 'google', then on many issues I'll add 'wiki' at the end. I've found they address many things asked by us common folks. Of course you could also google, the Oklahoma Constitution itself, finding the same answer.
