    Hi all,

I wonder why European accept Cyprus as a member state in 2004.

Because, I feel that Cyprus is not united as a whole country for the sake of the Turkish Republic. Why EU didn't think that is a major problem?

The only reason Cyprus isn't united as a whole country is because the Turkish military is squatting on the Northern part. The rest of the country is autonomously governed and a recognized nation by the UN.

Getting both the Greek and Turkish governments out of Cyprus and making it an autonomously governed state is the only solution to that problem. It's an incredibly ridiculous conflict considering that both Greece and Turkey are NATO allies, and Turkey is petitioning to become a EU state as well.

Yeah, that is where my question lies on: why EU absorbed such a partially united country, with ridiculous conflict? Why EU didn't consider such as a problem which might affect its benefit?

It might have more to do with the effect it will have on Cypress's neighbors than it does with wanting Cyprus in the union. Having member states in that area of the world is a strategically smart decision.

I think kojax hit it on the head. While the Copenhagen criteria may make the EU seem like a Union with principles to uphold as countries are accessed into it, the fact of the matter is that it is just a political institution: the motives behind Cyprus were purely strategical in nature, I would think.
