With this whole Smithsonian and ID fiasco. It seems to me that scientists are practically handing the ID movement a handful of PR points.

Scientists spend too much effort as it is defending itself. It results in biased science. Oo, don't research that, it'll just give ammo to the guys criticizing us. Like that guy researching cosmic rays and cloud formation as sources of changes to planetary temperature. Don't research that, you'll just give the pro business political right wing ammunition!

Science needs to be done dispassionately and without political regard. You never know what good science is under that politically incorrect rock. Can you imagine trying to publish a report saying that you found cognitive differences between African Americans and European Americans? Even if you tried to do good science, and got peer reviewed, it would be scientific suicide. You'd be labeled a racist. So that research never gets done, or gets done with a bias towards the politically correct Universalism. Which may or may not be the way things really are.

If good science is coming from proponents of Intelligent Design, it's still good science. Let the science stand on its own feet, and on its own merits. If anything we should be specifically seeking out politically incorrect scientists to fund! Give federal grants to ID proponents and greenhouse gas critics. Just like with the legal system, recognize that the dispassionate truth can be found by weighing the impassioned and biased cases of diametrically opposed viewpoints.

    I agree with Numsgil.

The very foundation of modern science was created by people who believed in intelligent design. That includes Darwin at least during the time of his voyage on the Beagle.
