What will happen if you run a magnet over a cd/game/dvd?
Somebody told me it will make it defective. Is this true?

Normal cassete tapes and things like that (VCR, floppy disks etc..) store data in magnetic domains on a length of magnetic tape, and as such can be easily erased by a strong magnet. Most such devices have write-protection on them that basically means some form of magnetic shield near the writing region, but this only reduces EMI and other unwanted interference...not much match for a strong magnetic field. Hard drives work off the same principles.

Things like CD's, and DVD's on the other hand store data as physical grooves on the bottom of the disk. A laser assembly then simultaneously fires a laser at the disk and detects the reflected beam, as the disk spins. It can tell if there is a 'bump' or a 'groove' (a digital 1 or 0) depending on the phase of the reflected light. The grooves are usually cut 1/4 of a wavelength thick so that refelcted light is 180 degrees out of phase, and destructivly superimposes.....so that a sensor picks up a pulse where ther is a bump, but nothing when there is a groove. These disks should not be affected by magnets at all. I'm not sure about X-rays though, but from what Selene says they seem to have some affect on the disks.

If it is just a cd-r No, some paper shredders are rated to handle cd's though, that would be the best way.

    Paper shredders?????

CDR's are made of plastic! Yeah that's really gonna screw the paper shredder you just forked out good money for.........they are called 'paper' shredders because they shred paper!
If they shredded CDR's dont cha fink de advertisers would add that to the spiel?????

    Err....durrr

If I remember rightly, an interesting point about these digital, read-by-laser, media is that the actual information tends to be stored on the 'silvered' portion which is nearer to the non-read side of the disk - ie, the laser reads through the disk and nearly all the way to the other side. The best way to really deleter information, therefore, is to scratch the label side of the disk rather than the transparent/clear side. Just a thought...

Calm down, yes it is a paper shredder that also shreds cds

You are just being a troll

This is my last post on this forum. Say whatever you want but your not fooling anyone but yourself.

I was just trying to help the author of the forum by giving advice on how to make sure data from a cd could be securely disposed of. I'm not sure how the two of us arguing over stupid terminology can help him, but do what you think is best...

    Ha ha ha

Funny how people resort to accusations of trollism when they have lost an argument by initially instigating trollism by calling somebady an ass.

Don't throw ass shit if you can't somebody hurling ass shit back at you.

Wipe that ass shit off your face and grow up.

So what am i expected to do roll over like a nice girl door mat and keep my mouth shut?

It seems to me that it's ok for somebody to cuss but when they get cussed back then all hell breaks loose and i am accused of trolling.

I think you're all male fascists and you don't like it when the fair sex fight back. This is evident in your statement of me being a 'nice girl'

What you mean is 'come on Selene, your a girl, act nice'

Well i never made any claims to being 'nice', i'm only pleasant and polite to those that deserve it!

If you want to start a fight with me fine, but don't go crying and babbling like a baby when i kick the shit out of you.
