Something I have just been wondering about magnets.

A magnet has a north and south pole, right ?

North and south attract. N/N repel and S/S repel

So why then can they exist as a single mass in the first place ? - What I mean to say is that if N/N repel, how come the particles in the north pole dont fly away from each other; and likewise with the south.

The hand of time rested on the half-hour mark, and all along that old front line of the English there came a whistling and a crying. The men of the first wave climbed up the parapets, in tumult, darkness, and the presence of death, and having done with all pleasant things, advanced across No Man's Land to begin the Battle of the Somme. - Poet John Masefield.

It's quite simple really, what bonds the atoms together is stronger than what is trying to tear them apart!

Its like putting a spring between two blocks of wood then squeezing them together and sticking them together.
