If it is found, what exactly does this mean? Can we find a way to manipulate this boson?

    It's no longer lost.

Even rid something temporarily of mass?

If it's found then we know that Higgs fields are the mechanism for giving mass to particles. I highly doubt we could manipulate it in any way, considering we've had a rather difficult time finding the thing in the first place. At least there'd be no real applicable manipulations of it, like removing mass. And besides, the way I understand it, a particle's mass is determined by the Higgs field, but it's more how the particle interacts with the field, not how the field interacts with the particle. In other words, messing with mass on a subatomic scale would have to take place not on the Higgs boson end but on the particle-with-mass end, though I'm not an expert on it by any means, that's just my current understanding.
