In this months edition of BBC Focus, there is an article about the different types of lightning observed in nature. The article also mentioned a form of lightning called Positive lightning which originates from the top of a cloud (which is positively charged) and occurs much more rarely than negative lightning.

Does anyone know what the composition of positive lightning is, compared to that of negative lightning?

Any and all lightning is a discharge of current through an ionized channel.

Positive lightning initiates from a higher electrical potential voltage because of the increased distance involved.
The current involved could be much higher since it discharges less frequently.
