I have been lobbying the office of the President since I was in high school about the dangers of detonating underground nuclear devices on Earth. President Bush found my last set of letters of value, or perhaps his science advisor used my writings for advancement. He declared the international test ban treaty enforced by virtually every country of Earth to be in effect. My concern is that the Pentagon is lobbying the President and Congress to allow them to resume nuclear testing.
    Here are my concerns:
Sound vibrations travel through solid matter and liquids more readily than through gasses. When a nuclear device is detonated underground, the nuclear pulse travels from one side of Earth through the center, to opposing side. The magma core is surrounded by a very dense structure called the mantle. Inside the mantle is the magma, the liquid state of rock effectively. When nuclear pulse travels through mantle it enters the magma sphere. Once inside the Magma sphere, because if the liquid state of rock, nuclear pulse vibrations bounce between opposing mantle sides very efficiently. This event is commonly observed by yelling into a canyon and listening to the echo. Also it is common occurrence that Sonar exists.
The extreme danger in allowing such nuclear pulse to echo between Mantle causing echo pulsation of magma core is not the echo event directly, but the harmonic motion of earth. Simple Harmonic Motion is a Law in Physics that must not be ignored. When analyzed the time it takes the nuclear pulse to travel between the opposing mantle sides is called Harmonic event and is 1.3 seconds per cyclic event. Earths natural harmonic is 1.3 seconds per cycle. When a mass structure is exposed to its natural harmonic wavelength, It is being exposed to it’s Simple Harmonic Motion. We are exposing Earth to its Simple Harmonic Motion at nuclear level pulsations.
An old Memorex commercial tells the story well of what may occur if the Pentagon is allowed to resume nuclear underground testing. The commercial is of a woman singing at such a pitch (frequency) that a crystal glass shatters by exposure to the glass Simple Harmonic Motion. The problem with exposing Earth to its Simple Harmonic Motion is that the crust is much like the thin shell of crystal glass, and will effectively shatter when exposed to SHM. Consider relationship of current seismic events with that recorded before underground nuclear testing. There have been thousands of such underground tests recorded and documented. People kind is most defiantly on the verge of extinction if the Pentagon has its way. They ignore the obvious, at least to Engineers and Physicists, and desire to put caution aside so that our aging stockpile of nuclear arsenal may be tested. PLEASE DO NOT LET THIS HAPPEN! Our lives and the lives of our children/grandchildren… depend on it. Since I am only one of the few that recognize the danger, THE PUBLIC MUST ACT NOW! If not, volcanic eruptions of exponential magnitude may become commonplace. The United States of America has a Super Volcano called Yellowstone National Park. By disrupting Earths Natural Harmonic State in exposing Earth to its Simple Harmonic Motion, Yellowstone Super Volcano may erupt prematurely. Having little else to add, I request that the public be informed so that action may be taken to prevent continued underground nuclear testing. Sincerely, Arthur J. Lewis

Good point, well made. Whether theres any fact in it I don't know, because I don't know that much about geology.

I agree that nuclear testing is a bad thing, because it leads to the maintenence and eventual use of nuclear weapons, but the idea that it will cause the Earth to vibrate to such a degree that it shatter the crust is silly. Krakatoa exploded with many times the force of a nuclear weapon, and the Earth absorbed it. The crust is already divided with many cracks (tectonic plates), and fractures. The sound wave generated by a nuclear weapon becomes progressively weaker with distance, so, it might be detected on the other side of the planet, but you would hardly feel it.

Consider relationship of current seismic events with that recorded before underground nuclear testing.
    What is that relationship?

If not, volcanic eruptions of exponential magnitude may become commonplace.
They already are, and have been for billions of years.

The Sumatra-Andaman quake released an amount of energy equal to a 100 gigaton bomb.

    (from CNN)

...and the earth is still here after having it's rotation and crust altered as never recorded before. I don't think there are any 100 gigaton bombs.

Folks, ya need to review colledge physics relating to Simple Harmonic Motion. Specifically when the reactive frequency occures, mass destruction occures at far less energy than otherwise needed for mass to be destroyed. The harmonic motion of earth need be amplified but very little to induce results. I'm just saying that we should be aware of the possibilities.

Lets just put our heads in the sand and ignore de Broglie as stated in
w.l.=h/(mv). Ignore Simple Harmonic Motion LAW of physics. Ignore that the Earth is mass on macro scale. Ignore Eienstins formula E=mC^2. Ignore that siezmic events have recently been documented by U.S. Geoligical sources as having increased in amplitude and frequency.
LET US ALL DIE TOGETHER IN IGNORANCE! It would appear that in our pride, we shall destroy the planet which we live. Ignore the evident and we all shall die in ignorance.

I'll have to go with spidergoat on this one. I couldnt have said it better myself about how small most nukes are compared to such natural geological events. The bigest nuke ever exploded by Russia and the US I think was 50 mega tonn, producing about a 1 kilometer crater. I would be
far more concerned with other dangers to our planet.

It is not the magnitude that does damage in relation to Simple Harmonic Motion, but the frequency events generated. The cyclic rythem of low energy contant harmonics generated is within very solid physics law when observing reaction of exposure. Suppose arguing with a brick wall might be of more use. One who dismisses so readily without regard to known laws of science are a hard crowd to communicate with. Perhaps the recent planetary events are just coincidence, but perhaps not. Observe new under sea mountains having been formed. The Navy keeps oceanic maps very up to date. Consider the nuclear sub ran into a mountain recently, no mountain was illustrated in the up to date maps. Perhaps the many deaths caused by tidal events are coincidental, many many siezmic events have been logged as being more of a regular occurance by the U.S. geological service. If events continue, watch the Earth turn inside out. Who will be alive to disprove me then. I certainly hope to not live in the hell that may follow. If I'm wrong, great and wonderful, no deaths will occure. But if I'm right, what then?
