I have done a lot of searching on this in the past and have not found much, it might be simply because I'm not wording it right though.

My question is does any form of directed magnetism exist? As in could I make a magnet that wouldn't attract anything over a foot to the left but would attract something 20 feet in front of me?

The only form of focused magnetism I have seen is a quadrapole magnet, but that isn't quite the same as what I'm talking about. I also saw something on wikipedia.org where the magnets were arranged so that it got about twice the range on one side then the other, but that's it. Sorry I don't have a link, that's just from memory from a while ago.

Magnetic fields exist between a north and south pole, so whatever you do the field curves around and back to the other pole by the shortest route. If what you suggest could be done there would be all sorts of products out there.

Not even if you gave an electro magnet an AC frequency of around 50 Terrahertz ?

Then the field would be loose enough to play with ?

    No ? Im ony guessing.
The hand of time rested on the half-hour mark, and all along that old front line of the English there came a whistling and a crying. The men of the first wave climbed up the parapets, in tumult, darkness, and the presence of death, and having done with all pleasant things, advanced across No Man's Land to begin the Battle of the Somme. - Poet John Masefield.

So even using other magnets to manipulate the field maybe?

    Thanks...

If you can build and AC source that works at 'Terahertz' I'll get you a nobel prize in physics.

How DO you change AC frequency ?

And can someone tell me, in a natural magnet, what stops all of the same-pole charge particles flying apart ?

constructing certain kind of circiuts that is able to transform a low frequens to higher or even less.

We got one at my school, can go up to 50khz
